Michigan assistant Jay Harbaugh has quickly earned a reputation for being one of the most tenacious recruiters on the Wolverines’ newly formed staff. That trait has been evident with practically every prospect he’s pursued since coming on the job, but none more so than 2016 Philadelphia (Pa.) Imhotep Institute standout Naseir Upshur.
Harbaugh has been hot on the four-star tight end’s trail since being hired, and made it a point to stop in the City of Brotherly Love when the evaluation period began earlier this week.
“I was (Harbaugh’s) first stop,” said Upshur. “We talk every day. We’ll stay on FaceTime for like an hour. The coach I talk to the most is definitely Coach Harbaugh. He tells me I’m (the top tight end on Michigan’s board) all the time.”
Upshur isn’t yet ready to return that sentiment, but appears to be getting very very close.
“I’m coming up with a top ten,” he said. “Things might change, but Michigan is definitely one of the schools that I’m very high on.”
“If signing day was tomorrow they would definitely be one of the schools (under consideration). I basically have got to talk it over with my parents and everything. So I’m very high on them. I’m not going to give you my other schools that I’m high on, but they would be one of my top three schools.”
As positive at that news is for the Maize & Blue, a lot can change between now and February 3rd, 2016. But with a few schools clearly standing out on his list, will he really wait that long?
“(Waiting until signing day) was my plan, but the way things are going I’m not sure,” said Upshur. I might want to get it out the way.”
“(It will come down to) academics, my relationships, being comfortable, and I want to be able to play early.”
The Wolverines have obviously already met some of that criteria, but in order to meet the rest they’ll need to get the talented youngster back on campus.
“I’ve definitely have got to visit again real soon,” said Upshur. “I don’t have a date yet, but I’ll definitely be visiting."
