Then, well, he received some unexpected news.
"Michigan was at our practice one day," said the 2017 four-star offensive lineman. "My head coach while I was warming up came up to me he goes 'Michigan offered you.'
"I was really surprised. I didn't expect to get it at that time. And then when I got it I was happy because it was an offer that I really wanted."
Now that he has his offer from the Wolverines, Herbert didn't hide what the offer meant to him personally, although he says he is still keeping his options open.
"That's a real big school for me," he said of Michigan. "But I have no favorites right now. It's still very early in my recruitment. I taking everything in consideration and where I want to spend the next four years of my life."
"I just want to learn how they are going to be playing the next couple of years. I want to learn about the offensive line coach a little more. I want to take a visit to Michigan actually."
That being said, will he take a trip to U-M for a visit this summer?
"If I can, then I will definitely do it [this summer]," he said. "But if I can't, then I'll just wait until I can take an official visit.
"I want to see their facilities. Then getting to practice and see how the coaches interact with the players. Really, the environment of the school and how everyone is."
