Big Ten Media Day Notebook (Day 1)

What is an offseason without lists and polls to get the fans talking? With the first day of Big Ten Media Days underway in Chicago, the conference released some talking points for fan consumption. On top of that, the first Coaches Poll was also released today.

Big Ten “Preseason Players to Watch” list released

The Big Ten released its fifth annual “Preseason Players to Watch” list that saw 11 players from the conference receive recognition.

A select media panel gathers each year to vote on five players from each conference. However, this season saw an extra player added due to a tie occurring in the West Division.

The preseason list did not see any Wolverines selected. Michigan State and Ohio State dominated the East division with two selected players from both schools.

The list is as follows:

Connor Cook, QB, Michigan State
Shilique Calhoun, DE, Michigan State
Joey Bosa, DE, Ohio State
Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Ohio State
Anthony Zettel, DT, Penn State

Drew Ott, DE, Iowa
Maliek Collins, DT, Nebraska
De’Mornay Pierson-El, WR, Nebraska
Justin Jackson, RB, Northwestern
Michael Caputo, S, Wisconsin
Corey Clement, RB, Wisconsin

Jim Harbaugh major storyline according to BTN writer

According to Tom Dienhart from the Big Ten Network, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh tops his list of storylines heading into Big Ten Media Days.

Dienhart predicts that “Harbaughmania” will take over the event once Harbaugh hits the podium to talk about his new football team on Friday.

Dienhart writes: “You might have heard the news: Michigan hired Jim Harbaugh. The hype, anticipation and build-up of Harbaughpalooza even dwarfs the run-up to Christmas. Jimmy Boy and his khakis, ball cap and whistle seemingly have been in the news every day, whether fawning over Judge Judy, stirring emotions with his patriotic defense of ‘American Sniper,’ going shirtless in a camp and showing his hipness by Tweeting to rapper Big Sean. Harbaugh is an indomitable force who America can’t ignore. So, don’t even try. Now, let’s see if he can win some games. I shudder to think what will happen if Harbaugh actually one day leads Michigan to its first Big Ten title since 2004. Harbaugh for President!”

Coaches Poll released

The preseason Amway Coaches Poll was also released today. Coaches who vote in the poll believe the reigning national champions, Ohio State, are the number-one team heading into the 2015 season.

Also rounding out the top-25 for the Big Ten are Michigan State (sixth) and Wisconsin (18).

The Wolverines received one vote for the top-25 and are listed in the receiving votes section of the poll. Nebraska (27), Minnesota (25), Penn State (20), Illinois (seven) and Maryland (one) also received votes as well.
