Decision Day Looms for Starting U-M QB

Could there be a resolution to the starting quarterback situation? Apparently so, as Jim Harbaugh discussed with the media on Thursday.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – With a week to go until Michigan’s clash with Utah next Thursday night, the lingering question of who will start at quarterback still lingers.

During his first media availability of fall camp, U-M head coach Jim Harbaugh still did not announce any type of starter for the position.

However, there does appear to be light at the end of the tunnel and the answer might come as soon as Monday.

“I was informed that the competition for Thursday night’s ballgame, Utah will be sending us their official depth chart Monday,” Harbaugh said. “In the interest of fair and healthy competition, we will also send our official depth chart as well.”

Does that depth chart include a definitive starting quarterback?

“Yes, it will be ranked one through three,” Harbaugh said.

Compared to years past, U-M’s depth charts have been riddled with or’s when stating starters. Harbaugh took a quick heel turn and said that that having an “or” on the depth chart is a possibility.

With a week away until the first game of the season, and whether you choose to believe him or not, Harbaugh says he has not made a decision on the starting quarterback.

Or has he?

The most indicative answer to the quarterback question might've come from one of the players in offensive lineman Kyle Kalis.

"At this point in camp we know who the starter is going to be, we know the deal pretty much," he said.

In typical Harbaugh fashion, all throughout camp one thing in particular has stuck out to him about his quarterbacks. He has preached it since day one and the assistant staff has followed suit as well.

That is having a competitive attitude and embracing the challenge.

“Both have been very aggressive, very competitive,” Harbaugh said. “Competitive demeanor every day is important to them. The thing that’s been most impressive about both of those youngsters is how important it is to them.”
