Michigan’s Jabrill Peppers and Jourdan Lewis highlighted the Big Ten all conference defensive award announcements today for the Wolverines, with both players named All-Big Ten first-team members by both the media and coaches respectively.
Peppers, who played primarily on defense to go along with his contributions on offense and special teams, was named Thompson-Randle-El Big Ten freshman of the year as well.
Through 12 games played, Peppers defensively finished with 45 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss with 10 pass break ups, which was second on the team.
As U-M’s primary punt returner, Peppers was also named All-Big Ten second team return specialist. During the season, Peppers earned praise from coach Jim Harbaugh for his field awareness, making multiple catches that saved Michigan crucial field position this season. He finished with 194 punt return yards to go along with his 223 kick return yards.
Peppers started contributing on the offense side of the ball in Michigan’s 27-23 home loss against Michigan State, and has played six games offensively overall. He finished the season with eight catches for 79 yards receiving, while adding 72 yards on the ground with two rushing touchdowns.
Arguably the best cornerback in the Big Ten, Lewis led the Big Ten with 21 pass break ups, which is also a new U-M single season record. He finished fourth on the team in tackles with 49, and also had a touchdown return on one of his two interceptions.
Lewis gave his reaction to the announcement on his Twitter account.
Senior DE Chris Wormley was named All-Big Ten third team by the coaches. He led the team with 5.5 sacks with 12 tackles for loss.
Kicker Kenny Allen was named All-Big Ten third team by the media. He made 16 of his 20 field goal attempts.
