HIS RECRUITING STORY
What more can be said about the number one recruit in the country? This is the big fish, the consensus number one player in the 2016 class. Michigan, as well as every other school in the country, have been recruiting Rashan Gary heavily throughout the entire recruiting progress. Having his former high school coach on staff in Chris Partridge as well as having numerous New Jersey commits in the 2016 class really helped pull Gary to Ann Arbor.
"Gary is a mix of power, speed, athleticism and explosion. He has great speed and his ability to chase a play down are exceptional. He ran a 4.74 in the 40-yard dash at The Opening in July, and he plays fast. He can use his strength to overpower an offensive lineman, he has a tremendous change of direction and his explosion is off the charts." -- Brian Dohn
Quote by Rashan Gary's mom:
“We went to visit the president,” Coney said referring to University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel. “When Coach Partridge said we’re going to meet the president my eyes rolled to the back of my head, like, ‘what are we going to meet him for?’ But I was very impressed by him because he seems to be an academic guy (first). He came from Brown University, he worked for Cal Berkeley, and he’s just been there for a year, but he understands and supports the academics. It’s the support they have for all the athletes (that’s so impressive). It doesn’t matter football, basketball, baseball… they need academic support primarily because they’re work schedule… their school schedule. If they don’t have anyone to back that academic part up, nine times out of ten you’re destined to fail. Unless you’re a great student with great time management skills you’re destined to fail. He said, ‘my kids don’t fail.’ He puts everything in place to make sure they’re successful.”
A consensus number one player usually isn't brought in to just sit on the bench. If he's ready to play, he'll play right away for Michigan. With Willie Henry off to the NFL, there will be an opening for someone to step in and play right away. Gary might not be a day one starter (though all signs point him to be) but you will definitely see him become a contributor on defense sooner rather than later.
