HIS RECRUITNG STORY:
Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech 2016 OG Michael Onwenu committed to the Wolverines back in June. However, his recruitment got a little dicey after taking an official visit to in-state rival Michigan State in mid- January. In the end, Onwenu confirmed his commitment to the Michigan Wolverines at his signing day ceremony in front of family, friends and teammates in Detroit.
“Big, powerful mauler who looks like he's just a road grader, but has shown at camps that he may actually be a better pass blocker at this point in his career. Naturally strong and wins when he gets his hands on defensive linemen. Would like to see him play at a little lower weight, which would improve overall quickness and mobility, but he bends well, plays with a great base and is technically sound. Could play guard or center in college." - National Analyst Allen Trieu
WHY ONWENU CHOSE MICHIGAN?
“I was there with my family. That was actually the first time my family had been to a college all together. Other times I would go with brother or my momma. We was altogether this time. I just thought it was right.
“Having my family and the distance [played a factor]. I had a lot of out of state offers and everything. That wasn’t the biggest factor. But I’m glad I committed now that my family can watch me and I’m close to home.”
At 6-foot-3, 360-ppounds, Onwenu is more athletic than he looks. He’s strong as a bear, yet moves with such agile and grace for a man his size. He projects more as an interior lineman, and could even play center when it’s all said and done. He will most likely redshirt, but can easily be looked as the best offensive lineman in Michigan’s 2016 class.
