Michigan's New Jersey connection continued with the signing of defensive tackle Michael Dwumfour.

His Recruiting Story:

Heading into his junior season, Michael Dwumfour was barely considered a college football recruit. A young man with great size, decent explosion and ability in the middle of a defense, it took a very strong junior campaign and the release of his film to get several college coaches interested in his services. Interest came pretty quickly with things heating up last spring. Once Penn State came calling with an offer, Dwumfour didn't wait long to pounce on the opportunity. As it became clear Michigan was a school interested as well, Dwumfour didn't shy away from his interest in the Wolverines, even taking a visit to Ann Arbor. Not long after that, Dwumfour made the switch to the Wolverines.

Scouting Report:

Dwumfour disengages well and he is quick with his hands. He has explosion, but has a tendency to stand up quickly before accelerating forward. Once he explodes forward at the snap, he will become even more effective. Dwumfour has good strength and he plays with a low center of gravity, and he keeps his pad level low. He changes direction well and can make plays in space. At 6-foot-1, some schools make be hesitant to offer. -- Brian Dohn

Why Michigan?

Dwumfour's bond with Michigan grew quickly, in part because of the relationship with No. 1 overall player in America Rashan Gary. Ultimately opting to rescind his commitment to Penn State in place of Michigan, Dwumfour spoke with Scout.com:

“I knew I wanted to go (to Michigan) when I visited there,” said Dwumfour.  “When I stepped on campus and had a chance to be around the players, the coaches, and the people there it just felt right.  Everything felt right.”

“A lot of people assumed (the commitment to Michigan was coming) because (during) my junior year I always use to say Michigan was my dream school.  So people kind of knew it was coming. I don’t think a lot of people are surprised.”

Bottom Line:

The Jersey connection was key in Dwumfour's recruitment as he'll join friend and running back Kareem Walker in Ann Arbor, also potentially welcoming the signing day addition of Rashan Gary. Dwumfour couldn't pass up the opportunity in Ann Arbor.
