One of the top overall performers at the Chicago Showcase was Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary’s junior wide receiver K.J. Hamler. The speedy wide out displayed his quickness and catching ability against some of the best in the Midwest. After his impressive day, he talked about his recruitment and the latest with him and the Wolverines.
“I haven't been in contact with Michigan recently but hopefully I get to go back up there soon,” Hamler told The Michigan Insider. “I’m still trying to get back up there and I’m going to call Coach Harbaugh soon. I’ll most definitely try to visit for the spring game, so I will probably go up there with Josh (Ross), who just committed and is my boy. I will probably go up there with him. I’m not for sure (if I’ll visit for the spring game), but I’m going to talk to Josh and see if I can come up there with him.”
The Wolverines now have a feather in their cap with the 5-9, 150-pound elusive playmaker having his teammate and friend committed in linebacker Josh Ross. While it is uncertain if that will improve the Maize and Blue’s chances for this top in-state talent, Ross hopes to lure his fellow top in-state standout in the fold.
“I can’t say it means something and I can’t say it doesn’t,” said Hamler. “That is my boy and congrats to him. I’m proud of him for making that decision, but if Michigan is the right fit for me, then it will be the right fit for me.”
“Josh is my best friend and we talk everyday. You know he’s going to try and convince me to get to Michigan. He always does and is like KJ come over to Michigan and Go Blue! I’m like Josh I got to think about it. He tries to persuade me over there.”
Although communication hasn’t been high between Hamler and the hometown Wolverines, his interest hasn’t fallen and he still sees a lot to like when looking at Michigan.
“I like everything especially with Coach Harbaugh is over there now,” said Hamler. “The whole vibe is so electric over there and so much enthusiasm is over there. I can tell you that Michigan is going to be NFL ready and Coach Harbaugh is going to make them NFL ready.”
Hamler hears from many coaches on a constant basis and has established many relationships along his recruitment, but one coach he’s forged a relationship with and hopes to see it grow is with Michigan running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley.
“Coach Wheatley is my main recruiter,” said Hamler. “He is an amazing guy and great coach. He knows how to get everyone right and ready for the next level. I know I haven’t talked to him in awhile, but there is just something about him that makes me interested in Michigan. I think I can build a better bond with him.”
