Michigan offered 2018 St. Louis (Mo.) Parkway North defensive end Michael Thompson Jr. last week.

Before last week 2018 St. Louis (Mo.) Parkway North defensive end Michael Thompson Jr. had heard hardly a peep from Michigan. When the Wolverines finally did make contact they did so in a big way.

Offers have been flowing out of Ann Arbor at breakneck speed lately, with most of the activity coming in California and throughout the South.  Other regions still managed to receive their fair share of attention though, and last week the Wolverines reached into the heartland to offer 2018 St. Louis (Mo.) Parkway North defensive end Michael Thompson.

“It came through last week on Friday,” Thompson said regarding the scholarship from Michigan. “(My coach) called to his office and told me. It came out of the blue. It was shocking.”

The Wolverines weren’t on Thompson’s radar before, but suffice it to say that changed pretty abruptly.

“I’m interested now,” Thompson said matter-of-factly.  “I like their Coach, Jim Harbaugh. He’s a good coach. He’s been to the Super Bowl.”

That’s about all the talented youngster knows about Michigan at this point.  He hasn’t yet had a direct conversation with the coaches, but that hasn’t stopped him from thinking about when he might make his way to Ann Arbor for the first time.

“(A visit will happen) probably during the summer,” he said.

At that point Michigan will have a chance to begin making up ground on a field of offers that also includes Illinois, Kansas State, Iowa, Missouri, Iowa State, and Louisville. One of them is currently sticking out from all the rest.

“Louisville,” replied Thompson when asked if he has a leader. “I liked the visit when I went there.”

With a decision timeline that calls for him to make a choice on or near signing day of his senior year, the Show Me State star insists his leaderboard is far from set in stone. He hasn’t even determined all the criteria that will go into his choice. He can only list a few factors at this early stage of his recruitment.

“My major and probably the coaches,” he said. “I don’t know what I want to major in yet.”

Stay tuned for more on Thompson in the weeks to come.
