Michigan linebackers coach Chris Partridge traveled all over the Texas the past week identifying top talent and looking to build the 2017 class. One prospect that the Wolverine have been monitoring closely is Missouri City (Tex.) Ft. Ben Elkins junior outside linebacker Kenneth Murray. After seeing him up close, it didn’t take long for the Wolverines to pull the trigger and extend an offer out to Murray.
“I have been talking to the linebackers coach for awhile in Coach Partridge and we have pretty much been building a relationship for a while too,” Murray told The Michigan Insider. “The only thing he was really waiting on was actually seeing me in person and my grades. Everything checked out and he watched my scrimmage along with a couple other coaches, who I got offered from that day. They all watched it and were really impressed with it. Michigan was actually the first school to offer me on that day.”
“I walked up to him after the scrimmage, shook his hand and gave me his card. I talked to him on the phone and he told me he got off the phone with Jim Harbaugh and I had an offer from Michigan. I was really excited because it is a big offer and it just means a lot that they believe in me. I really was excited about it. We also talked about what position they want me to play, everything about the school like what they have to offer.”
One topic that was also discussed was visiting Michigan, which Murray plans on doing.
“We talked about (visiting) as well, but we don’t have a date set in stone when we will visit,” said Murray. “I do know for sure that I am definitely going to visit Michigan. I have too much of an interest in them not to visit. I definitely will visit, I don’t know when and haven’t set a date, but there will be a visit that I will take.”
With the physical 6-2, 215-pound Murray now holding a Wolverine offer, his interest has gone way up.
“I was really really interested and after getting off the phone with them, it pretty much skyrocketed up there, so I really interested in what they have to offer,” said Murray. “That’s what I feel about them right now, very very interested in them.”
A main reason for Murray’s strong interest in the Wolverines has been the relationship that has been built with Coach Partridge, which he hopes to continue to strengthen further.
“We have a really good relationship,” said Murray. “I have been talking to him for a while now and we talk on Twitter. He’s always checking up on me and letting me know he’s thinking of me. I would say we have a great relationship right now and I’m looking to build upon that relationship in the future. I’m looking for a good position coach and I really like where I stand with him. We have a good relationship, but I’m looking to build it more now that I have an offer.”
While Ann Arbor is not the closest city for Murray and his family, it would still provide a sense of home by having some Midwest connections and actually could be a positive when considering the Wolverines as well.
“Not at all,” said Murray on the distance factor. “Distance doesn’t really play a factor for me. I’m pretty comfortable wherever I go and I have stayed away from home a couple of times before and it’s not that bad. I also have family up in Michigan and most of my family is from Ohio, so I got a lot of family around that area. That is not a factor at all.”
“Last time, I was up there a few years ago, they were saying, “Michigan this and Michigan that”, so pretty much a lot of my family is from the Detroit area. Yeah, definitely (would be more comfortable if I picked Michigan). It is good to be around family, so that would be another factor that would draw me to Michigan and I think that would be a great fit for me being around family. I think it would be great.”
Murray currently has no top list, but will down his narrow down his suitors and release a top list sometime over the summernull
