Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary’s 2017 WR K.J. Hamler talke Opening invite, updates his recruitment and more.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Four-star 2017 wide receiver K.J. Hamler came to Nike’s Opening Regional combine with one goal: earn an invite to The Opening finals this July.

Well, after a strong performance that included earning camp MVP honors, Hamler walked away with his invite.

“I honestly can’t believe it right now, honestly, I’m in shocked” Hamler said of his The Opening invite on Saturday “I came out here knowing I had to compete with the best of the best. I was a little bit sore from my track meet (on Friday), but I still fought it through. I came out with what I needed to come out with.”

Hamler, who stars at Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary’s, recruitment is heating up as well.

In fact, the speedster has been hearing considerable interest from programs outside Big Ten country.

“Oregon has been talking to me a lot,” Hamler said of the Ducks. “They come to my school on May 25. Oklahoma is talking to me a lot they come to school on (Monday). I still keep in contact with all the Midwest. I’m trying to get out to more Pac-12 schools that are also looking at me.”

Michigan has been recruiting Hamler for some time now, however, it seems his courting by the Wolverines has cooled as of late, he says.

“Honestly, I haven’t really been talking to them lately,” Hamler said of Michigan. “I actually just saw coach (Tyrone) Wheatley at my track meet (on Friday). He was there to watch his son. I talked to him for a minute to see how he is doing. But they still keep in contact a little bit. … We just try to keep a good relationship going.”

While his relationship with U-M has cooled, Hamler says he will be paying attention to Michigan’s offense this season to see if it fits his slot/speed receiver playing style.

“I want to see their offense, I want to see if they are going to spread their receivers out and give them the ball a little bit more,” Hamler said of U-M. “Not just pound and pound and pound, I got to see if it is a perfect for me.”

As far as a decision timeline, well, Hamler hasn’t decided yet when he will make his announcement. “I don’t even know right now,” Hamler admits. “I’m just being patience and going with the flow, if I feel like I need to commit then I will. But I am taking my time right now.”
