The Lone Star State has been a recruiting hotbed for Michigan, which the Wolverines have looked to tap into as of late. The Texas area was heavily traveled by defensive line coach Greg Mattison during the evaluation period. There were many prospects he saw including Allen (Tex.) Lovejoy sophomore inside linebacker Bumper Pool. On Tuesday, the Wolverines officially entered the mix by extending an offer.
“My coach texted me to call Coach Mattison, so I called him up,” Pool told The Michigan Insider. “We have been in contact for quite a bit and he came down one of the first weeks of spring ball. He basically said (on the phone) that you are the kind of guy we want to offer and today we are going to make it official. I was so excited because Michigan has the biggest stadium and then all the wins in their history. The tradition is great, the coaching staff is wonderful, the rivalries they have. Overall, it is just a great program and a beautiful state.”
The rising linebacker prospect has been in communication with Coach Mattison, who he’s built a strong early relationship with.
“It’s great,” said Pool. “Every time we talk, it is always a great conversation between the both of us and we both understand getting to the ball and he knows more than I do, so it is great to learn from him and be able to talk to someone who understands where you are coming from. It’s great.”
The Wolverines join now Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor and SMU on the 6-foot-2, 215-pounder’s offer list, but maintains no school is sticking out at the moment. Still, his latest offer from the Maize and Blue has him eager to get out to Ann Arbor this fall.
“(My interest) is about the same as every school,” said Pool. “I’m interested, but it’s early and I have never seen the campus, so I am excited to go down there. It is definitely a great school that I’m going to be looking into. I plan on going up for a game this fall.”
However, Pool will have the opportunity sooner rather than later to see the headman himself, Jim Harbaugh this month by attending one of the Texas satellite camps.
“It’s excitement I have with the way he wants players to go up there,” said Pool. “I have never met him, so I will be going to a camp down here next Tuesday I think it is and get to meet him. I’m excited about it.”
Pool has an upcoming busy summer agenda as he will be at Oklahoma State tomorrow and try to get out to Texas A&M, Houston, Arkansas, Texas and TCU this summer as well
