MOBILE, Ala. – Considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the class of 2018, Saraland (Ala.) High’s Jack West made his way over to Michigan's satellite camp at South Alabama on Wednesday to work with U-M coach Jim Harbaugh for the first time.
“It was great being able to work with coach Harbaugh,” West said. “You don’t have that many opportunities to work with a guy of that magnitude. He’s a guy that knows the game, the knows the position, anything he had to say I was going to take it from him.”
Harbaugh, who’s former NFL quarterback himself, first move with West was to correct his throwing motion early on in camp.
“Anytime I go to a camp, the first thing I do is ‘what do I need to do to get better today?’” West said. “With coach Harbaugh he saw something with my hip, and he gave me (some advice) real quick. The next throw I was out there I added it to my game. I got a little bit more velocity on my ball.”
And Harbaugh also have West a little bit of advice on how to approach his recruitment, too.
“I’ve gotten to talk to him on the phone many times,” West said of Harbaugh. “Today was the first time I got to meet him in person. He’s always told me along with coach (Jedd) Fisch to take this process slow, and really take everything I need to know about a school, integrate it and see what is the best school for me. So they are guys who are team first and really care about the person and them choosing the best fit for them.”
Now that West has had a chance to work with Harbaugh one-on-one, he says he would “love” to have a chance to go up to Michigan for a visit.
“To get an offer from any school is a blessing, especially from a school like Michigan,” West said. “And a school of that magnitude, they have great academics along with football. I take great pride in academics, that’s what I put first in my life. Also coach Harbaugh, he’s a coach that’s coached in the NFL. And at the same time, Michigan their quarterbacks that they’ve had there, I know Jake Rudock was just there, people like Tom Brady, that history speaks for itself.”
Adding: “Michigan is definitely a place I will look at extremely hard, and really get to know everything about it.”
As of right now, West says he doesn’t have a decision timeline.
