Ron Johnson knows he’ll be enrolling at Michigan on June 25. What he doesn’t know yet, is where the Wolverines plan to play him on the defensive side of the ball.
“Not really, we’re just going to see how things go when I get there as far as outside linebacker or defensive end,” Johnson said, who stands at 6-foot-4, 255-pounds at the moment. “I just don’t know yet.”
Either way, Johnson says it doesn't matter what position he starts his career at.
While adjustment to college life is as expected, Johnson admits the move from Camden, N.J. to Ann Arbor, Mich., won’t be easy, but is something he must deal with as he progresses his college career.
“It’s pretty bitter-sweet, but I’m ready to get out there,” Johnson said of U-M. “I’m going to miss my people. But this is a business; this is what I signed up for. This is what I want to do.”
Adding: “I’m ready, I got to attack it 100-percent.”
Johnson’s former high school teammate, 2017 center Caser Ruiz, now stars at Bradenton’s (Fla.) IMG Academy. The two of them remain close friends, says Johnson, and Ruiz so happens to have an offer from Michigan.
“That’s my old teammate or whatever, we’re real tight,” Johnson said of Ruiz. “I keep in touch with him at IMG or whatever, like every other day he calls me on facetime, that’s what he does, he facetime’s me all the time. We be kickin’ it.”
Does he think U-M has a good shot with Ruiz?
“I think we stand pretty good, honestly, I think we stand good,” Johnson said U-M’s standing with Ruiz. “I’m not going to pressure him till he makes his decision.”
