With the 2017 recruiting class up to seventeen commitments, the Wolverines are not forgetting abut their 2018 class, which already has four pledges. Several offers have been extended with one of the latest going to Farmington Hills (Mich.) Harrison 2018 outside linebacker Ovie Oghoufo.
The rising in-state defender talks about his offer from Michigan, a program he knows well..
“I talked with (Defensive Line) Coach (Greg) Mattison and he told me how well I would fit into the Michigan defense and offered me,” Oghoufo told The Michigan Insider. “I was very excited because I have a lot of connections to Michigan. A lot of family connections. It was great. Both of my cousins in Mario and Michael Ojemudia. Mario actually went there and played for Michigan. My cousin Michael was recruited by Michigan too. I also have a really good connection with Coach Mattison and Coach Wheatley.”
Mario Ojemudia, a former player for the Wolverines, is a natural family tie Oghoufo has to the Wolverines. He's also doing his best to recruit his cousin to Michigan.
“Yeah, Mario loves Michigan and you could tell the program is still in his head even with being in the NFL,” said Oghoufo. “He’s going to do everything he can, so that I can also go to Michigan.”
Another strong bond he’s established is with Coach Mattison, who really likes his versatile skill set he brings to the gridiron.
“As a coach, he’s very experienced and that means he will make me the best player that I can be. His connection with Mario is pretty much unbreakable. That is definitely an influence on me if I go there. They see me playing as an outside linebacker and sometimes also being a hybrid defensive end if I get the weight or even play a little safety too. I’m an athlete, so I can pretty much adapt to what the scheme he’s going to do.”
The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder now has seen his interest significantly rise in the Wolverines and plans to check out Ann Arbor later this summer.
“I am very interested and it definitely a great school and can’t wait to get there,” said Oghoufo. “The next time I will be there is at the BBQ.”
Oghoufo’s recruitment is still early in the process, but is on the rise with new offers and interest coming in. Despite not having an official top list yet, there is a few schools standing out at the moment.
“I don’t really have a top list, but the ones that are really sticking out is Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Boston College and Bowling Green,” said Oghoufo. “I’m looking for just the right fit where I can academically and athletically achieve my goals. I also want a strong connection with the team and coaching staff.”
Oghoufo also hopes to get out to Notre Dame and Michigan State this summer as well.
