CHICAGO – Along with nine of his peers, Jabrill Peppers was named to Big Ten’s preseason honors list today, which included five representatives from the East and West divisions respectively.
Peppers, who was named to the All-Big Ten Team by both the media and coaches in 2015, also earned the Thompson-Randle-El Big Ten freshman of the year as well. So his selection should come to no surprise, as he was chosen by a select media committee before the start of today's Big Ten Media Days in Chicago.
Through 12 games played last season, Peppers defensively finished with 45 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss with 10 pass break ups, which was second on the team.
As U-M’s primary punt returner, Peppers was also named All-Big Ten second team return specialist. During the season, Peppers earned praise from coach Jim Harbaugh for his field awareness, making multiple catches that saved Michigan crucial field position this season. He finished with 194 punt return yards to go along with his 223 kick return yards.
Peppers started contributing on the offense side of the ball in Michigan’s 27-23 home loss against Michigan State mid-season, and played six games offensively overall. He finished the season with eight catches for 79 yards receiving, while adding 72 yards on the ground with two rushing touchdowns.
Joining Peppers on the East squad include: Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett and linebacker RaeKwon McMillian, Penn State running back Saquon Barkley and Michigan State defensive tackle Malik McDowell. The West division representatives include: Iowa QB C.J. Beathard and defensive back Desmond King, northwestern RB Justin Jackson and LB Anthony Walker Jr., and Wisconsin RB Corey Clement.
Michigan opens up its season with Hawaii on Sept. 3.
