ANN ARBOR, Mich. –At midnight, Michigan's clothing apparel store, M Den, opened its doors as U-M's athletic department started a new era as an officially licensed school by both Jordan Jumpman Team and Nike alike.
Before the doors opened, however, the store front on South State Street was mobbed with a few thousand diehard Michigan fans, who lined up to buy the new Jordan/Nike U-M apparel. In the midst of all of the excitement, U-M coach Jim Harbaugh himself stopped by to give the frenzied crowd a speech. Of course, he wore wore his signature blue hat with a maize block M on the front. The only difference to that hat -- this time it sported a Jordan jumpman logo on the back -- as Harbaugh showcased the brand for the first time as Michigan’s head coach.
“In my 52 years, a lot of right here in Ann Arbor, Michigan – I have never seen anything like this,” Harbaugh said to roughly a few thousand screaming fans on a stage located in front of the building.
“I want to thank Michael Jordan. I want to thank the M Den. I want to thank everyone here – this is big time!”
Then someone yelled Harbaugh’s signature line, “who’s got better than us?” Which Harbaugh replied, “let me answer that question – nobody.”
Former U’M Heisman trophy winner Desmond Howard spoke moments before the doors opened, unveiling a new hype video showcasing the Michigan/Nike & Jordan merger. He also noted the “Michigan difference” as big reason for last night’s celebration.
Among other former U-M stars, LaMarr Woodley and Jimmmy King addressed the crowd. New athletic director Warde Manuel sported a the same hat as Harbaugh, but only wore his backwards. Members of both the U-M football team and men’s basketball team spoke to the crowd.
But it was Harbaugh who ended his speech making some hopeful predictions that got the crowd excited.
“The thing that strikes me right now, we aspire to be big,” Harabugh said. “We aspire to win championships. This looks like the amount people you would need when we win a championship.” Adding: “Thank you all for coming out – Go Blue!”
