With two offensive and two defensive line commitments as of late August, Michigan may still be looking for two more of each. And, probably, a tight end.

Tight End

- Dale Thompson (probable Sept. 13 official visit, 6-4, 250 lbs., 4.7 in the 40, 2.7 GPA, June 7 SAT) from Corona, Calif. On Aug. 22 he told us, "I have a Thursday game the week of the (Sept. 13th) Notre Dame game. So I'll be calling Coach English soon to set a visit that weekend. I believe it will be my official visit." His leaders: "USC, UCLA, and Colorado. I might decide sooner rather than later -- I've been to USC and UCLA enough already and I'd like to make my decision after my Colorado visit, which will be after I visit Michigan." U-M has OFFERed him. In an injury-plagued junior season he caught six passes for 125 yards and three touchdowns. As a sophomore, he caught 16 passes for 350 yards and five touchdowns. - Michigan Commitment #6: Alex Mitchell (2003 U-M Camper, U-M Nike stats: 6-6, 317 lbs., 5.69 in the 40, 24 bench press reps., 5.09 sec. shuttle, 20.0 inch vertical, 3.4 GPA/21 ACT) from Bay City, Mich., Central. His dad emailed us: "Yes Michigan did offer Alex, and he committed during summer football camp (on Wed., June 18). He will be a Wolverine! He is happy, and the recruiting process is over for us. On Aug. 20 he told us, "My brother and his wife are taking me up for the Michigan/Notre Dame game. It'll be great to meet the other guys visiting for the game. I think it'll be unofficial visit for me. Actually I'm quite sure about that. I'll take an official visit to Michigan later on." He will also make fall visits to Purdue for the Notre Dame game, Iowa for a game (maybe U-M, for his official visit there), OSU for a game (official visit) and possibly UCLA and Oregon. They (Jeff and his father) visited Notre Dame yesterday. They will stay with Jeff's sister and family in Ann Arbor tonight, and then go on to Ohio State tomorrow. By the way, I have family in Michigan too -- my sister lives in Frankenmuth." He may be ranked as the top offensive lineman nationally in the class of 2004 by TheInsiders.com. He throws the shot put 53 feet and the javelin 159. He also plays center for his basketball team. He is from Iowa originally, and reportedly plans to visit U-M, OSU and Notre Dame this summer. He committed on the first day of the Michigan Camp. As a junior he recorded 75 tackles, 12 tackles-for-loss and eight sacks. He attended the OSU basketball game Junior Day, and was OFFERED there. - Michigan Commitment #5 Will Johnson (2003 U-M Camper, U-M Nike stats: 6-4.5, 278 lbs, 5.15 in the 40 {4.71 electronic at the U-M Camp}, 30 bench press reps., 27.9 inch vertical, 4.56 sec. Shuttle … 425 lb. bench press 3.8 GPA/qualified) from Lake Orion, Mich. He was offered at the U-M Camp, and went home and committed to Michigan the next day (Wed., June 18). Johnson could end up on the D-line or O-line. As a junior he recorded 97 tackles and 11 sacks.

- Alan Branch (2003 U-M Camper, 6-6, 300 lbs., 5.2 in the 40, 4.65 in the shuttle, 2.5 GPA/17 ACT) from Albuquerque, New Mex., Cibola. He attended the U-M Camp for the whole week but didn't commit; Texas A&M, ASU and WSU have also offered, as well as the instate schools. He attended the US Army Combine in January. - DE Dwayne Hendricks (Oct. 25 official visit, PSU Nike stats: 6-4, 250 lbs., 4.8 in the 40, 30 inch vertical jump … 3.2 GPA/910 SAT) from Millville, New Jersey. In mid-aug. he confirmed to us that he'd visit for the Purdue game: "Yes, that's the one. A former player from here plays for Purdue … It'll be an official visit." He got a U-M visit and phone call in May. He was a spring practice visitor on April 5th, and U-M has OFFERED him. "Yes, my coach and I went. We watched practice, and we talked to pretty much every Michigan coach. That's when we set up the fall visit. We also met with Coach Carr -- that's when he offered me a Michigan scholarship." At the PSU Nike Camp he told us, "My favorites right now are the three schools that have offered me: in order, Michigan, Iowa and Virginia." But in mid-Aug. he said, "I'm not sure ... I don't really have one favorite now ... I'm not going to narrow it down until I take more visits. I'm just listing eight or ten schools: Michigan, Iowa, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Miami, Florida, Georgia Tech, and Oklahoma. They've all offered me." As a junior he made 65 tackles and three sacks. He attended the OSU basketball game junior day last winter, and a spring practice at Michigan. He reportedly no longer plans to make a summer decision. Wisconsin is under consideration, as well as Notre Dame, Iowa and others. As a junior Hayden had approx. twenty sacks, and averaged approx. ten tackles a game for the 10-2 Arrowhead. - Ryan Baker (2003 U-M Camper, 6-5, 235 lbs., 4.9 in the 40, 3.5 GPA) from Indianapolis, Ind., Bishop Chatard. He attended the July 26 U-M Open House, after which his dad told us, "Will Johnson and Roger Allison were both there and Ryan talked to them.Will and Roger have actually been to our house!" He has an early U-M OFFER. Notre Dame may be the main competition. As a junior tight end last year he had 13 receptions for 251 yards (19.31 yards per carry); as a defensive end he had 42 solo tackles and 26 assisted tackles (for 68 total), 17 tackles for loss and nine sacks. Jeff Schweiger (Aug. 30 official visit, Nike Camp stats: 6-4, 240 lbs., 4.56 in the 40, 4.11 in the shuttle, 31 bench press reps, 30.9 inch vertical ... 3.0 GPA) from San Jose, Calif., Valley Christian. On Aug. 26 his father told us, Yes, he is making his official visit to Michigan this weekend. I just called Coach English. We just got off the phone, and we got it set up." Jeff told us in the afternoon: "USC, Oklahoma, Michigan, Miami, and Notre Dame. I don't really have a favorite and I don't have any other visits set up, official or un-official."
