Here is the Aug. 26 update of our "Best Guess Michigan Recruiting Class" – the linebackers and defensive backs.

Michigan may want two of each: inside linebackers, outside linebackers, safeties, and cornerbacks.

Linebackers

Note: Michigan still seems short of linebacker prospects – or our knowledge of them is.

- Michigan commitment #4: ILB/FB Roger Allison (2003 U-M Camper, U-M Nike stats: 6-1 1/2, 229 lbs., 27 bench press reps., 3.4 GPA/25 ACT) from Lake Orion, Mich. He was offered at the U-M Camp, and went home and committed to Michigan the next day (Wed., June 18). He attended a U-M spring practice and the MSU football game last fall. As a junior he made 102 tackles, and also ran for 1,630 yards and 21 touchdowns from the tailback position. He is TheInsiders.com's #35 Big Ten area prospect.

- Marcus Freeman (U.S. Army Combine stats: 6-2, 225 lbs, 4.66 in the 40, 4.22 shuttle, 30-inch vertical jump, 28 bench press reps. of 185 lbs. ... U-M Nike stats: 6-1, 235, 4.62 in the 40, 4.37 sec. shuttle, 32.4 inch vertical, 25 bench press reps. … 430-pound bench press, 575 lb. Squat, 3.6 GPA/18 ACT/990 SAT) from Huber Heights, Ohio, Wayne. He did not attend the U-M Camp. At the U.S. Army combine he told us that this is likely to be an OSU/U-M recruiting battle. He received a Michigan OFFER at the Feb. OSU basketball game junior day. As a junior he made 152 tackles and 29 tackles for loss. He is TheInsiders.com's #95 prospect.

- OLB/DE Eugene Germany (Oct. 18 official visit, USC Nike stats: 6-3 1/2, 248 lbs…. 4.65 in the 40, 2.3 GPA) from Pomona, Calif. In late Aug. he told us, "My Michigan visit is set for the Illinois game weekend. That's Oct. 18th. USC and Michigan are still my top schools." He grew up a U-M fan, and his coach and his recruiter Ron English are friends. As a junior he made166 tackles and nine sacks; he also caught 14 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns. He is TheInsiders.com's #16 Pac Ten area prospect.

- James Bryant (PSU Nike stats: 6-3 inches, 237 lbs., 4.62 in the 40, 4.14 in the shuttle, 30 inch vertical jump, 26 bench press reps. … 400+ lb. bench press, 2.7 GPA/1100 SAT) from Reading, Pa. He reportedly has a written U-M offer. At the PSU Nike Camp he told us that Pitt was his favorite (his brother plays for the Panthers), and that he was not that interested in U-M ... we'll see if that changes. As a junior Bryant tallied 132 tackles and recorded eight quarterback sacks.

- Keith Rivers (6-3, 225 lbs. 4.55 in the 40) from Lake Mary, Florida. Considered perhaps the #1 LN in the country, he lists the instate schools and USC as his favorites, but U-M is recruiting him hard. He is TheInsiders.com's #18 prospect.

- Lawrence Timmons (Miami Nike stats: 6-1, 220 lbs., 4.55 in the 40) from Florence, S.C., Wilson is The Insiders' #21 Atlantic Area prospect. In late July he told us he lists, "Miami, Florida, Michigan, Maryland, and Tennessee," and that all except Miami had offered him (Michigan's is a ‘verbal offer'). As a junior linebacker Timmons made 95 tackles; on offense as a wide receiver, he had 42 catches for 690 yards and 14 touchdowns.

- Michigan commitment #8: Safety Charles Stewart (2003 U-M Camper, U-M Nike stats: 6-1 1/2, 188 lbs., 4.47 in the 40, 3.5 GPA/21 ACT) from Farmington Hills, Mich., Harrison. He was the top DB at the U-M Nike Camp. He attended the MSU football game last fall, the OSU basketball game junior day, and the first spring practice. As a junior he made 59 tackles and intercepted two passes. He is TheInsiders.com's #27 Big Ten area prospect.

- U-M transfer: DB/WR Grant Mason (6-0, 190 lbs.) from Orchard Lake, Mich., St. Mary's (via Stanford). He transferred to U-M from Stanford in late Aug. He will sit out the 2003 season and then have two seasons of eligibility.

- Cornerback/safety Keston Cheathem (Oct. 18 official visit, 6-2, 185 lbs., 4.55 in the 40, 2.8 GPA, 820 SAT) from Pomona, Calif. On aug. 22 he told us, "My Michigan visit is set for the Oct. 18th weekend, the Illinois game. I also have official visits set up for Washington and Washington State, on the 27th of Sept. and the 4th of Oct. I'm also going to visit Colorado, but haven't set a date yet." U-M visited his school in May, OFFERED him, and has been his FAVORITE. He is underrated as TheInsiders.com's #43 Pac Ten area prospect.

- Safety Jamar Adams (Sept. 6 official visit, 2003 U-M Camper, 2001 U-M Camper, V-Tech Nike stats: 6-2 1/2,193 lbs., 4.13 sec. Shuttle, 33.2 inch vertical jump … 3.0 GPA/940 SAT) from Matthews, N.C., Butler. In mid-August he told us, "I'm coming up the Sept. 5th weekend for my official visit, for the Houston game. My mom is coming too. Michigan is my leader." As a junior he made 58 tackles and five interceptions. He is TheInsiders.com's #76 Atlantic area prospect.

- Cornerback/safety D.J. Davis (6-1, 187 lbs., 4.45 in the 40, 2.9 GPA/930 SAT) from Ft. Worth, Tex. Dunbar. In June he told us he is on the verge of a U-M offer (as of late July there is still no offer), and U-M is a childhood favorite. He reportedly likes Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Michigan and Florida. As a junior he played safety and cornerback, garnering 43 tackles (20 solo) and causing two fumbles; he also played quarterback. He is TheInsiders.com's #29 Big 12 area prospect.

- Cornerback Ted Ginn (2002 Michigan camper, U.S. Army Combine stats: 6-2, 187 lbs., 28.0 vertical jump, 4.40 in the 40, 4.17 in the shuttle, 28-inch vertical jump … PSU Nike stats: 5-11.5, 169 lbs., 4.31 in the 40) from Cleveland, Ohio, Glenville. Ted's father, the Glenville Head Coach, told us this winter, "Ted likes Ohio State, but he likes Michigan too. In fact Ted loves Michigan, but he also loves Ohio State. He has grown up following both." Ginn's senior and junior were at the OSU game junior day. And Ted camped at Michigan last summer with Donte Whitner. In fact he has been at the Michigan camp the past three years. He has a Michigan OFFER. He is MaxEmfingerRecruiting.com's top cornerback. Ginn was the top hurdler in the state last year as a sophomore, running the 110-meter hurdles in 13.96.

- Safety Greg Hinds (Aub. Nike stats: 6-1, 200 lbs., … 4.5 in the 40, 305 lb. bench press, 30 inch vertical jump, 16 ACT) from Southaven, Miss. U-M visited his school in May, and reportedly is very interested in him. U-M and Auburn are reportedly his FAVorites, followed by South Carolina, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.
