Michigan coach John Beilein says defensive variation is part of the reason for the up and down performances for Wolverines.

Michigan's inability to find consistency offensively this season is puzzling.

The Wolverines have shown the ability to put up 50-points in one half, like they did in a loss at UCLA. Unfortunately for John Beilein, the offense has also fallen short of 50-points in an entire game in a loss at South Carolina.

"We have been up (and down)," Beilein said Friday afternoon. "I think the last two games, much better. But against Texas we had no consistency with our offense. But it has a lot to do with the way people guard us and us adapting.

"I've never seen as much change as I've seen from game to game of how people guard you. It's not like in football where you've got a week to get ready."

Part of the season for the dip in performances or offensively, or the spike in other games like the 97-point output against Central Arkansas, can go back to the variation of defenses and styles Michigan sees on a nightly basis.

"The change in basketball is so different than it was," Beilein said. "There was six or seven things you would do in the preseason and you'd be ready for them all.

"Now, you don't know game to game what people are going to do so that's been the issue right now."

One of Michigan's key developments offensively comes in the form of German center Moritz Wagner.

Scoring in double figures in each of the last six games for the Wolverines, including 18-points Tuesday night in a victory, that consistency will be needed moving forward.

"The game is simpler than it looks sometimes for him," Beilein said. "And also the game is more complex sometimes. It's not about going down and saying I've got my man, now I've got to guard my man.

"The complexity of it, you can't do the same thing every time when they're playing you that way. You've got to mix things up."
