The state of Ohio is loaded for the 2018 class and Michigan is already recruiting several of the top players the state has to offer. The Wolverines recently extended an offer out to one of those top junior prospects in Cleveland (OH.) Heights junior defensive end Tyreke Smith, which has him even more intrigued in the Maize and Blue.
"I found out by my coach through (defensive backs) coach (Michael) Zordich,” Smith told The Michigan Insider. “I was very excited though! I know that they have a great coach. I also know that their education is good. I like the way their defense plays and I like how Coach Harbaugh came to the program and turned it around. It's a great offer for me because Michigan is a top team and they are coached by a great coach! I've always been interested in them, but I have gained more interest now that they have offered me.”
One of the top factors that has piqued the 6-foot-4, 250-pounder’s interest in the Maize and Blue is head coach Jim Harbaugh.
“I think he's a great coach with a lot of experience about the game and I look forward to having a good relationship with him,” said Smith.
After landing an offer from the Wolverines, he added that he plans to visit Michigan in the future and hopes to attend several upcoming junior days.
“I have some junior days that I'm going to try and make, but I'm in basketball season, so I'll have to see. I’m looking to go to Ohio State, Kentucky, Penn State, and I don’t know who else yet,” he said.
While Smith is already ranked an early four-star prospect and holds many offers, he's still looking to build beyond his game.
"I’m a quick, strong, athletic defensive end/pass rusher. Still working on my technique, learning how to watch film and learn more, but also just getting faster and stronger.”
