Signing Day Capsule: Ambry Thomas

Checkout the signing day capsule of Michigan 2017 CB commit Ambry Thomas.

HIS RECRUITING STORY:

Ambry Thomas comes from the fertile recruiting grounds of Detroit King, and is arguably the top prospect from the state of Michigan. He has been one of U-Ms top priorities in the 2017 class. He had a back and forth recruiting battle with U-M's rival Michigan State, taking multiple visits to both schools. He ultimately committed to U-M back in the summer as a silent commit, but didn’t break the news till December.

SCOUTING REPORT:

“Fast, athletic kid with good ball skills who could play either side of the ball in college. Needs to still get physically bigger and stronger, but has all of the other tools and can also be a dangerous return man.” -- National Recruiting Analyst Allen Trieu

WHY THOMAS CHOSE MICHIGAN?

“For quite some time it was just Michigan-Michigan State. It’s just was hard,. probably a week ago I started leaning towards Michigan a little bit more, I was still in contact with Michigan State coaches, that’s what made my decision hard. But I knew what I had to do,” Thomas said days after his commitment on Dec. 8, 2016.

Adding to his reason why he became a Wolverine.

“It’s my type of defense, it’s a man press defense. So I am going to assign to one guy all game, so I like that. I feel like they have good people up there. They’re winning and know what they are doing. I’m ready to win, l don’t like losing, I’m ready to win.”

BOTTOM LINE:

Thomas is a flat out game breaker, and could pay early dividends as a return man as a freshman. But that’s not all, Thomas can also play both ways. At 5-foot-11, 175-pounds, he’ll have chance to start as freshman at one of the corner spots, and enrolling early can only help his status there. Plus, at the Nike Opening Finals he proved he can be an elite receiver if asked upon, because simply put, nobody could stop him. Either way, big things are expected from Thomas in his U-M career.
