Florida 2018 Safety Cajuan Smith Names Michigan in Top-Five

West Palm Beach (Fla.) Oxbridge Academy 2018 safety Cajuan Smith names Michigan in his top-five, talks U-M interest.

West Palm Beach (Fla.) Oxbridge Academy’s Cajuan Smith has held his Michigan offer for over a year now. In fact, he first received his news of his U-M scholarship after his practice during his sophomore season.

Fast forward to present day, and Smith says Michigan’s coaching staff has been in contact recently, and their plan is to keep on recruiting him.

“They said they’re going to be back around this spring to watch me practice,” Smith said of his talks with U-M. “Also, they said they’re going to be recruiting my area. Or just stop by and have a couple conversations with me.”

And it seems Smith has pretty high interest in the Wolverines, too.

“My coach also wanted me to start evaluating schools and things of that order,” said the four-star safety, adding: “Michigan is in that top-five.”

Why is Michigan making quite a positive early impression on Smith? Well, the Sunshine state standout admits its U-Ms academics that have caught his attention so far.

“One of my favorite teachers from my school graduated from Michigan,” he said. “He says it’s a great school. So for my family and me I would like to see how the architecture program is, I heard they have an astonishing architecture program, and just everything overall. People that come from that school or go there, I feel they care a lot about each other.”

Also, of course, Smith acknowledged he would like to meet Michigan’s headman himself, Jim Harbaugh, and was quick to point out U-M’s improved play in his first two years on the job.

“I’ve noticed they’ve come up a lot as far as playing better as a team,” he said of U-M. “They gave Florida State a fight, that was crazy. It was a good game. That shows me as a player that the coach knows what he is doing.”

Smith also pointed out that distance would not play a factor in his recruitment.

“I haven’t really thought about it yet, but me being away from home is not really a big thing for me,” he said. “It’s just that if I were to go somewhere far from home, I just want to make sure it’s somewhere I want to be and spend the rest of my four years there. … I’m definitely going to take an official visit to Michigan.”

In no particular order, Smith said Michigan, Florida, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisville, Auburn and LSU are notable schools right now in his recruitment.

As of right now, Smith says he plans on announcing his commitment on national signing day 2018.
