Of the many visitors Michigan hosted Friday, one more intriguing attendees was Grand Rapids (Mich.) Catholic Central offensive tackle Jalen Mayfield. The fast rising 2018 prospect is a Minnesota commit, but after meeting and talking with many of the coaches in Ann Arbor he left with a coveted offer in hand.
“It went great,” Mayfield told The Michigan Insider. “I met with Coach Drevno, Coach Frey and Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. We talked and watched practice. They just told me how they need more tackle type players on the offensive line.”
“Coach Harbaugh was talking to me and my family and told us (the news of the offer). I was a little shocked and very excited. We talked for a while just about football and life. I was excited to meet him and he is a great person.”
What stood out the most during his time in Ann Arbor? Michigan’s efficient and productive first spring practice.
“To see the way practice is ran and how much they expect from their players,” said Mayfield. “I was very impressed by it.”
After landing an offer from the Maize & Blue, Mayfield is now taking a much closer look at the Wolverines.
“I am really interested and (Michigan is) definitely up there,” said Mayfield.
And as for the status of his commitment to Minnesota?
“I don’t know still,” Mayfield replied. “Me and my family are going to decide still.”
