LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Scout’s No. 2 defensive tackle, Michael Thompson, came to Chicago’s Opening regional event in hopes of earing an invite to The Opening Finals this summer.
While no invite was extended, the four-star standout still made the top-five, rounding out a solid day from the St. Louis (Mo.) Parkway North star.
“I don’t feel like I did good testing, but as far as 1-on-1 wise, I feel like I did good enough to go to the next (Opening),” Thompson said.
He may be right, with half of the invites being sent out after the all the events conclude in late May.
Recruiting-wise, Thompson is high on Michigan's radar. In fact, he says U-M defensive line coach Greg Mattison had reached out right before Sunday’s camp, and the Wolverines have continued to establish ground in his recruitment.
“It’s just getting started,” Thompson said of his relationship with Mattison. “It aint full yet, but I feel like it’s going to get there.”
Though, Thompson says he’s well versed in what Michigan has to offer.
“I’ve kind of heard what I want to hear,” Thompson said of Michigan. “At first they were recruiting me at O-line, but they said they want me for D-line. So I feel like I can sit well with that.”
And his plan, he says, is to go back up to Ann Arbor for another visit.
“When I go back I just want to see around, because I really didn’t get to see around,” Thompson said. “And I want to meet with the coaches more.
Upcoming, Thompson says he’s planning a trip to Nebraska on April 15. He also noted that he would like to checkout Michigan and Ohio State again to gather more information on each program, and see if each program recruiting him meets a certain criteria.
“If I feel comfortable there or not, If I feel like I can there and play and get my studies good, and if I feel like I’m comfortable round the coached, then I feel like that will be the deciding factors,” Thompson said.
Thompson says he’s planning to announce his commitment on national signing day 2018.
