Mich. '18 OT Jalen Mayfield 'Intrigued' by Michigan offer

Grand Rapids (Mich.) Catholic Central 2018 OT Jalen Mayfield is "intrigued" by his Michigan offer.

LAKE FOREST, Ill.  -- Jalen Mayfield's recruitment has been ascending to new heights as of late.

The former Minnesota commit, who starred at Nike’s Opening regional held in north Chicago on Sunday, earned raved reviews at the combine event and updated his recruitment after recently decommitting from the Gophers last month.

In fact, Mayfield said, in no particular order, that Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa and Penn State are the four schools sticking out in his recruitment at the moment.

“I think last time I kind rushed into it thinking I could play pretty quickly there (at Minnesota)” Mayfield said, when asked about his deciding factors. “But I feel I am talented enough to play anywhere if I really work at it and do all that. I think what’s more of a fit for me, not just the easiest path.”

Michigan, whose offer many believed led to Mayfield’s decommitment, earned a high grade from the three-star standout after his recent visit to U-M’s campus.

“They have great tradition there,” Mayfield said of Michigan. “Basically their whole coaching staff is NFL. So they have a history of doing great things there and producing there. I think they put (17) guys out for the NFL), so that’s really got me intrigued with them.”

Adding: “We toured campus, campus is beautiful there,” Mayfield said of his U-M trip. “We met and sat down with coaches and watched practice. Just overall viewed Ann Arbor and seen all they have to offer there.”

Also, Mayfield acknowledged his opportunity to meet and greet with offensive line coaches Tim Drevno and Greg Frey

“They’re really cool,” Mayfield said. “We sat down and actually talked for an hour and half. Just talking about more than just football. It’s more life related, they wanted to get to know me and I wanted to get to know them.”

Overall, Mayfield says Michigan widened his “perspective” on being a future Wolverine.

“It really opened my eyes and gave me more perspective on what I can possibly can be,” Mayfield said. “I’m going to push myself everyday and hope more schools like that are intrigued by me.”

As far as his new decision timeline, Mayfield says at summers end is his new goal to commit.

“I’m going to let things play itself out, so I’m probably going to wait till the end of the summer,” Mayfield said.
