Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines haven’t been shy targeting top talent from all over the country. Michigan has found recent success in the Peach State plucking some of the best out and have many others on their radar including College Park (Ga.) Hapeville Charter 2018 cornerback Chris Smith. The defensive standout traveled up to Ann Arbor last month with some idea of how it may be like going in, but the visit went above and beyond that.
“It was great and really eye-opening,” Smith told The Michigan Insider. One of the things that popped out was how much they love football. The traditions up there run really deep. I’ve always heard that about Michigan, so it just validated my perception.”
“I got to also speak with (Head) Coach (Jim) Harbaugh and pretty much all of the coaches on the defensive side of the ball. I toured the facilities and got a great academic presentation. To close it out, I watched the team practice. It was all just great and Michigan really impressed.”
Harbaugh has taken the charge in Smith’s recruitment, so it didn’t come as a huge surprise that he got to spend some time chatting with the headman himself, but was a part of his trip that he really appreciated.
“It was great,” said Smith. “He's a great character with a great personality. We talked about the program and their mission. He also reiterated that he liked my game. It was a great conversation overall.”
A lot of aspects stood out to Smith about his visit to Michigan, but what the Maize and Blue offered academically was the highlight of his trip.
“My favorite part was the academic presentation,” said Smith. “It really went in depth about how they help the players during and after their years at Michigan.”
While Smith thoroughly enjoyed his visit with his dad, he hopes to return back to Ann Arbor next time with his mom too.
“Yeah, (I want to visit again) and I’m very interested,” said Smith. “I didn’t get to go with my mom, so she’ll want to see it. I think she’ll love it. My dad did.”
