2019 LB Thomas gives U-M visit high marks

Wake Forest (NC) Heritage 2019 inside linebacker Drake Thomas visited Michigan this weekend and talks about his trip.

Wake Forest (NC) Heritage 2019 inside linebacker Drake Thomas became a name to know this past season when he recorded 120 tackles along with 57 carries for 336 rushing yards and three touchdowns. That productivity caught the eyes of many programs including the Wolverines, who were first to offer. Since then, he’s added several other offers and this weekend traveled to Ann Arbor to check out the Maize and Blue.

“It was great,” Thomas told The Michigan Insider about his visit. “I got to tour all of the facilities, academic centers, the campus, I got to talk with most coaches and meet them, and meet some players, too. They also talked to me about all the new stuff that’s going to be built pretty soon and today I got to watch practice and talk to (Head) Coach (Jim) Harbaugh and check out the stadium! It was good talking to Coach Harbaugh and we just had a general conversation, like how my trip was and everything. I spent most of my time with (Linebackers) Coach (Chris) Partridge and (Defensive Coordinator) Coach (Don) Brown and got to sit down privately and watch with Coach Brown.”

Sitting down with Defensive Coordinator Don Brown and seeing what his role would be within this Michigan defense was very intriguing to the 6-foot, 225-pounder. It also happened to be one of his favorite moments from the visit.

“It was great,” said Thomas. “We got to sit down and talk football and he showed me where I would fit in on the defense and everything, which was at the MIKE and WILL linebacker positions. I do (think I could fit in the defense). Probably watching film with Coach Brown (was the best part of the visit) because I got to see all of the specifics of what they like to do on defense. Trying on the uniforms and going onto the field through the tunnel was really fun too, though.”

The other part that stood out was the top notch education Michigan has to offer as well.

“The only other thing that caught my attention was how good all the academic sides were,” said Thomas. “It wasn’t really surprising because I knew it was a great academic school to begin with, but just how much they focus on helping the student athletes be great students along with being an athlete.”

Despite having a very enjoyable visit to Ann Arbor, Thomas still maintains he’s considering all his options but does hope to get back to Michigan in the future.

“I’m very interested, but up to this point I’m very interested in every school I’ve gotten offers from,” said Thomas. “Hopefully over time I’ll develop a stronger opinion and know if that’s where I’d want to go to school or not. I think if I’m able to I’m going to come up to a game this fall too.”
