Derrick Walton Jr. wins team MVP at awards banquet

Derrick Walton Jr. was named team MVP during Michigan's basketball banquet on Wednesday.

The Michigan basketball season was capped off on Wednesday night with its annual awards banquet.

Wolverines point guard Derrick Walton Jr. was bestowed the top award, winning the Bill Buntin Most Valuable Player Award. Walton finished the season scoring 15.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.9 assists and was selected All-Big Ten second team.

On top of his MVP honors, Walton was also awarded Gary Grant Award for most assists with 189 this season.

Other awards handed out Wednesday night as follows:

Bill Buntin Most Valuable Player Award: Derrick Walton Jr.

Wayman Britt Outstanding Defensive Player: Zak Irvin & Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman

Travis Conlan Sportsmanship Award: Sean Lonergan

Rudy Tomjanovich Most Improved Player Award: D.J. Wilson & Moritz Wagner

Sixth Man Award: Duncan Robinson

Steve Grote Hustle Award: Xavier Simpson

Thad Garner Leadership Award: Zak Irvin & Derrick Walton Jr.

Iron Man Award: Mark Donnal

Award for Outstanding Free Throw Shooting: Derrick Walton Jr.

Gary Grant Award for Most Assists: Derrick Walton Jr.

Loy Vaught Rebounding Award: D.J. Wilson

Morgan/Bodnar Award for Academic Achievement: Moritz Wagner
