The Michigan coaching staff are keeping their options open with its last open scholarship. With only one offer out to 2017 five-star forward Mohamed Bamba, there are possibilities of more scholarships opening if either, or both, D.J. Wilson and Moritz Wagner elect to stick with the NBA Draft.
With Derrick Walton Jr. departing, there are available minutes for someone step in and take the starting point guard role. Currently, on the roster, sophomore-to-be Xavier Simpson is the only returning point guard, with signee Eli Brooks joining the program in a few months.
Enter James Daniel III.
According to ESPN Basketball Insider Jeff Goodman, the Howard transfer plans to take his official visit to Michigan on May 29.
MLive's Brendan F. Quinn also confirmed the report and said Daniel and head coach John Beilein have spoken as recently as Tuesday. While Daniel has not received a scholarship offer right now, he will be visiting Michigan five days after the withdrawal deadline for underclassman to return to school. Which would mean both parties will have a much clearer standing on the scholarship situation.
Daniel, who missed most of the 2016-17 season due to injury, lead the country in scoring a year prior with 27.1 points per game.
