Michigan Makes Move on Gholston

Vernon Gholston is off to a great start this season and GBW heard that Michigan had already been out to scout a few of his contests. As a result, there have been a few new developments in his recruitment.

Because Vernon Gholston only saw spot duty at defensive end last year, there wasn't much known about what type of prospect he was at that position. What was indisputable this summer is the fact that he's an awesome athlete. At 6-3 245 lbs. he can burn up the forty consistently in a time of 4.5 seconds. He also has great strength, evidenced by his ability to toss 185lbs up 31 times. Michigan was waiting to see how those workout numbers translated to the field, and after witnessing his play first hand at two games this season (against Mumford and Osborn), they have turned up their recruitment of the athletic phenom.

Vernon filled GBW in on where things stand.

How did you enjoy your unofficial visit this past weekend? Did you get a chance to hang out with any of the other recruits?

“I enjoyed it. Michigan did really well. I didn’t get a chance to really hang out with or talk to any of the other guys because I got there kind of late. I mainly spoke with the coaches.”

How has your season been going so far?

“It’s been going pretty well. I have 26 tackles, 5 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. We’re 3-0.”

I hear that a few Michigan coaches have been out to a couple of your games this year.

“I know that Coach Sheridan came out for the game against (Detroit) Osborn.”

Besides coach Sheridan, what other coaches have you spoken with lately?

“I’ve spoken with Coach Campbell. I also spoke with Coach Carr two weeks ago, and then again at the game.”

Did Coach Carr offer you a scholarship?

“Yes he did.”

Does that make them your favorite?

“Before, I was leaning more toward the schools that had already offered, but now everyone is about even.”

What other schools have offered you thus far?

Michigan State, Ohio State, and Indiana.”

Did you grow up a fan of any particular school?

“Honestly, I didn’t really get into football until my 10th grade year…. so no, not really.”

What position did Michigan tell you they were recruiting you for?

“They like me at defensive end.”

At one point you told me that you wanted to decide before the season started. What’s your timetable now that your earlier time frame has passed?

“I remember telling you that. That’s what I wanted to do, but now I don’t really know when I’m going to decide. I’m going to take a few official visits and go from there.”

Have you set up any official visits yet?

“No I haven’t.”

Do you have any idea what you might want to major in?

“I think I might want to go into some type of engineering.”
