"I'm excited," Pomona (Calif) DB Keston "Showtime" Cheathem (6-3, 190 lbs., 4.5 in the 40, 3.0 GPA, 820 SAT) said. "I'm not sure what to expect but I'm going to give things a good look."
Cheathem's Red Devils are not off to the normal Pomona beginning, "We haven't been doing so good," Cheathem said. Last year's Section semi-finalists are off to a 1-2-1 start, with a meeting Thursday with cross-town Rival Ganesha (alma mater of Michigan defensive backs coach Ron English). "This is the true test to see whether or not we got it together," he said.
Even though his team has had it rough, Cheathem has been getting respect from opponents, "Nobody will throw or run my way so I don't have a whole lot of defensive stats," he said.
Michigan is recruiting Cheathem as a DB. Exactly where in the defensive backfield isn't quite certain, "They've been telling me they want me as a corner," Cheathem said. "But if I gain some weight I'll probably play safety. I don't really care where I play as long as I'm on the field."
Cheathem has already made visits to Washington and Washington State. "Those went good," he said. "They were my first visits and I had a good time." After Michigan Cheathem said he plans to visit Oregon State and Colorado. "I don't have those set up yet but I want to get them out of the way soon after Michigan," he said.
For better or worse, Cheathem said he'd only seen Michigan victories this season, "Every time I've seen them play this year they've been blowing people out," he said.
Even though Cheathem is primarily a defensive prospect, the player he's noticed most is Michigan WR Braylon Edwards, "I see number one all over the place," he said.
Cheathem list his leading schools as, "Michigan, Washington, Washington State, Oregon State, and Colorado," he said. "I'll take all my visits before I make my decision, but that won't be until the end of the year."
Cheathem will be visiting with fellow Red Devil Eugene Germany. Also along for the trip will be his friend Thomas "Tom, Tom" Herring, from Fremont (Los Angeles), "We're chillin' and talking a little bit," Cheathem said. "We talk about what we're going to do when we're there."
