First, the very engaging and articulate Marques Walton (6-3, 280 lbs., 4.9 in the 40, 390 lb. bench press, 30 inch vertical jump, 2.5 GPA/25 ACT) from Chicago Hubbard.
Hi Marquis. What's the latest?
"Actually, my mother and girlfriend just made a visit to Michigan on Monday. I didn't go, I'd just been up -- I went up with my father for the Notre Dame game. Besides I had practice. But my mother hadn't seen Michigan -- she wanted to talk to the coaches. And we didn't have school Monday so my girlfriend went along with her."
Note: Marques' father is Lloyd Walton, former Marquette University and Milwaukee Bucks basketball great.
Who did your mom talked to?
"She talked to all the coaches. And she got a tour of the facilities, and she talked to the academic advisors. She had a good day."
What did she think?
"She was real impressed -- especially with the academic advisors. That's the main reason she went really, to check out the academics and the academic support."
Has Michigan offered you a scholarship?
"Not yet. Coach Moeller is calling and writing me though. And my dad set up an official visit when we were up there. I'm pretty sure it's for the first weekend of December."
What other schools do you plan to visit?
"Oklahoma, maybe Purdue, and Oregon (they've offered me)."
How is your season going?
"We're still undefeated, we're 6-0 now. We have a big game this Friday, versus Morgan Park."
Do you know what your stats are for the season?
"No I don't, not really. I'd be be guessing. I'm just interested in how our team is doing."
Note: Walton is humble, but is having a anything-but-humble season, averaging over a sack a game and around ten tackles.
Walton has big-time offers so far from Illinois, Northwestern and Oregon, and it's likely that more will be forthcoming. He is TheInsiders' #82 Midwest prospect.
And I also spoke briefly with tight end Octavious Darby (6-4, 225 lbs., 4.65 in the 40) from Hollywood, Fla., Chaminade-Madonna.
I hear that Michigan is in your top schools?
"Yes they are, with the Florida schools, and Iowa. But ... I haven't heard from Michigan in a long time. They haven't been calling me."
