At the time, in the summer, linebacker John Thompson (2003 U-M Camper, 6-1 1/2, 210 lbs.) from Detroit Crockett was considered a 'wait and see' type prospect. The natural ability was clearly there, but he just didn't pass the 'look test'. He was, well, kind of soft and even flabby looking. But he had another great season this past fall, leading Crockett to the PSL Finals and a 9-2 record, while reportedly making 130 tackles and 10 sacks from his ILB spot. Also, Michigan's linebacker recruiting has been low in quantity (although, we must add, not in quality). So the opportunity for Thompson to step to the fore as a top U-M recruit just may be there. Here is what his coach told us.
"John has offers now from Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana. Coach Campbell just affirmed to us that John definitely has a Michigan offer."
"John is visiting Wisconsin this weekend, Dec. 5, and has Michigan scheduled for January 9th. He has been saying that Michigan is his favorite, especially since coming back from the OSU game. He was also over there earlier in the fall, for the Notre Dame game. And in my opinion, John is a Michigan-type player -- he'd fit in well there. He can 'think on the run'."
The one knock on John in the summer, coming out of the Michigan Camp, was that he was physically out of shape. That just stuck out a little, compared to some of the other kids, and might have created a little bit of wondering about his work ethic.
"The Michigan coaches have told John that he has to work hard to get himself physically ready to come in and contribute at U-M. And John is willing to do that."
Note: the other 'co-top-LB' at the U-M Camp this summer was Chris Graham from Indianapolis. Chris looked, and played, like "Mr. Universe" at the camp, but at 5-10 1/2 and with a 2.2-ish GPA he has his own possible drawbacks as a U-M recruit.
