Cheathem: "My Mom Loves Coach E"

Pomona (Calif) DB Keston Cheathem hosted Michigan coach Ron English this past Wednesday. Evidently the Wolverine coach made a good impression with Cheathem's mom. GoBlueWolverine Magazine talked with Cheathem Sunday night about the visit and his plans.

Pomona (Calif.) three-star DB Keston Cheathem 6-2, 185 lbs., 4.55 in the 40, 2.8 GPA, 820 SAT) told GBW that Michigan coach Ron English made a favorible impression on his mother during his recent in-home visit. "My mom loves Coach E.," said Cheathem. "He talked a lot to her about how things were at Michigan then we talked about a bunch of stuff including the Michigan-Ohio State game, that game was tight."

Cheathem has had Michigan at or near the top of his list since the beginning of summer, when GBW first broke the news that he had a Michigan offer. Last time he spoke with GBW he said he had trimmed his list to Michigan, Washington State, and Oregon State. While those three remain among his favorites, Washington and Colorado have crept back into the picture. "I'm taking my last visit to Colorado this coming weekend," he said. "Then I'll just evaluate things and enjoy the off-season. I'll make my decision and announce it at the CaliFlorida game." He added, "I have a high interest in Michigan though. I mean they're playing in the Rose Bowl and have a Heisman Trophy candidate this year."

One of many perks the players get for being selected to the CaliFlorida All-Star game in a trip to the Rose Bowl. Of course this years game includes Michigan. Cheathem says he has a definite favorite. "I'm a Cali boy, but I'm rooting for my boys at Michigan all the way, no doubt about that."

Cheathem said he won't be playing any winter sports but will work out. "The Michigan coaches are telling me I'll play cornerback until I gain some weight, then I'll move to safety," he said. In the fall he plans on running track in the 100, the 4X100 relay, the long-jump, triple-jump and high-jump.

His in home visitors thus far include Washington State (12/1), Washington (12/5) with Colorado in-home Monday (12/8) and Oregon State sometime next week. Michigan Head Coach Lloyd Carr will join Coach English for another visit on Wednesday (12/10).
