Perry is Headed to New York

Michigan RB Chris Perry was selected to attend the 2003 Heisman Awards ceremony at the Yale Club in New York City. Perry will be going for Michigan's fourth award and first since Charles Woodson won the 1997 honor.

The recognition continues to pour over Michigan senior running back Chris Perry. Already a finalist for both the Walter Camp and Doak Walker awards, he was selected Wednesday as a finalist for the 2003 Heisman Trophy, signifying college football's top player.

Perry goes up against Oklahoma QB Jason White, SR. (White is 267-of-416 for 3,777 yards, 40 TDs and 8 INTs. He also has one rushing TD), Pittsburg WR Larry Fitzgerald, SO. (Fitzgerald has 87 receptions for 1,595 yards and 22TDs) and Mississippi QB Eli Manning, SR. (Manning is 253-of-410 for 3,341 yards and 27 TDs and 9 INTs. He also has 2 rushing TDs).

Perry ranks fourth nationally in rushing this season at 132.4 yards per game. He has rushed 315 times for 1,589 yards and scored 17 touchdowns this season. In the three big rivalry games against Notre Dame, Michigan State, and Ohio State, Perry averaged 38 carries for 169 yards (4.4 ypc), 39 yards through the air, and 2 TDs.

White is considered the favorite along with Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald would be the first sophomore to ever win the award. Perry is considered a dark horse in this year's race, but the strength of his final performance versus Ohio State in comparison to the final games of the other invitees may garner him enough votes to make some noise.

The awards ceremony takes will be televised live on ESPN this Saturday at 8 PM.
