Pershing Sophomore Deshawn Sims

Deshawn Sims was another of the veritable who’s who that I bumped into at the Holiday Classic on Friday. The sophomore big man is opening a lot of eyes with his play. I spoke to him briefly about his season and his feelings about Michigan.

How has your season been going thus far?

“I’m averaging about 23 points and 15 rebounds, but we’re 0-3. After this break we’re going put together some pieces to the puzzle and go on this winning streak.”

For those who haven’t seen you play, whom would you compare yourself to?

“I would compare my game to KG. I’m versatile like him.”

What schools have you heard from thus far?

“I’ve been hearing from Iowa, Kansas State, Clemson, Purdue, and Michigan State. I haven’t heard too much from Michigan yet. I want to hear more from them though.”

Did you grow up a fan of any particular team?

“I grew up liking NC State.”

What position do you see yourself playing in college?

“Primarily the 3, but I’ll play whatever I have to play for the program.”

Have you thought about when you’ll want to make your college decision?

“I want to make a decision by the end of my junior year.”

I also took the opportunity to talk to Pershing head coach, Gerald Witherspoon for quite a while about a number of topics. Here is what he had to say about his star sophomore.

“Deshawn Sims is an inside/outside player. He’s very good on the inside, but he can put the all on the floor for a big man. He has an excellent jumper. He’s about 6-7 229 pounds. He’ll be able to play small forward or big forward. In the pros I would compare him to Rasheed Wallace…just in his on court game! (Laughing).”

We’ll have more on Deshawn and his teammate Jabari Currie throughout the season.
