US Army All-American Pre-Game, Part 2

From The East Squad: reports and interviews. There are a Super Seven Michigan recruits playing on the East -- we talked to all of them today (Friday).

The consensus outstanding player on the East: Florida quarterback/athlete Xavier Lee. And quite possibly the biggest 'sleeper' -- Michigan commitment Max Martin, who is starting at tailback for the East.

In the quarterback skill competition the participants had to throw balls into barrels 25, 35 and 45 yards away. The only quarterbacks to make 'a basket': Lee and Chad Henne.

Chad Henne (6-3, 230 lbs., 4.6 in the 40, 3.4 GPA, from West Lawn, Pa., Wilson) chatted with us for a while about the Michigan wideout recruits at the game: Doug Dutch on his East Team, and also Caleron Colvin and Adrian Arrington. We won't quote Chad on what he said -- but he expressed optimism on all three.

Max Martin (6-2, 210 lbs., 4.5 in the 40, 305-lb.bench press, 2.5 GPA/24 ACT, from Madison, Ala., Bob Jones). This was our first in-person talk with Max. We sat with him for quite a while. Here are a few quotes from the physically-and-psychologically mature Max: "The coaches didn't really know anything about me when I got here, but they've told me they are inpressed with my speed as well as my power, and by my ability to catch the ball. I'll be starting tomorrow."
"I've talked to all the Michigan recruits here about coming -- mainly to my own teammates Doug Dutch and Tim Jamison. They both say they like Michigan. Doug is a great athlete, and Jamison really hits!"
"My dad is an engineer -- that's why we moved from Chicago to Huntsville Alabama. My dad got a job there with Boeing down there. They are planning on moving back to Chicago though. The Alabama and Auburn fans are really down on us for going to Michigan! My brother is an engineer too -- I think I'll go into business or finance."
"I always liked Michigan, rooted for them. And I hope to come in next year and compete for playing time. Coach 'J' (Fred Jackson) said I'd have a chance to compete right away."

Kyle Mitchum (Jan. 9 official visit, 2003 U-M Camper, 6-5, 270 lbs., 340 lb. bench press, 5.0 in the 40, 2.9 GPA, from Erie, Pa., McDonald). This was our first in-person with Kyule as well. He has gotten bigger since the summer -- and it is all muscle! "Am I down to Michigan and Ohio State? Well, Iowa is in it too." Note: he visits Michigan for his final visit next weekend.
