Best Guess Rec. Class List

With one more major official visit weekend coming up, it's a great time to update our Best Guess Michigan Recruiting Class List (maybe it'll be our final update?)! Here it is – with a particular eye on next year's Depth Chart.

Also -- recruiting is a numbers game! Counting scholarships and remaining slots -- it's crucial!

If you want our unofficial 2004 depth chart as a reference, click here: GBW's Spring Depth Chart

'Best Guess' Recruiting Class List:
Quarterbacks

Next spring there will be only TWO quarterbacks on scholarship – Matt Gutierrez and Clayton Richard. One would think Michigan would love two, not one, quarterbacks in this class. At least with Chad Henne coming in, there will be three GREAT ones!

- Michigan commitment #11: Chad Henne (Dec. 12 official visit, 6-3, 230 lbs., 4.6 in the 40, 3.4 GPA) from West Lawn, Pa., Wilson. For his senior season he completed 59 percent of his passes for 1,743 yards and 19 touchdowns (vs. only five interceptions); his four-year career total: 7,071 yards, third highest in Pennsylvania high school history. Henne made an unofficial visit for the Sept. 13 Notre Dame game, mainly to help recruit WR Cameron Colvin who was on his official visit. He committed to U-M on Aug. 7th. He visited U-M the June 20 weekend, after which U-M quarterback coach Scot Loeffler spent a day working his high school coach's camp. On May 13 Lloyd Carr spoke at the nearby Manheim Touchdown Club Banquet. He is TheInsiders.com's #28 prospect, and played well in the US Army All American Game.

Running Backs

With three non-senior running backs on next year's roster (Pierre Rembert, Jerome Jackson and Anton Campbell if he doesn't move to DB), it's not surprising that Michigan has taken two in this class – and would still like to land RB/Athlete Ja'Kouri Williams.

- Michigan Commitment #2: Max Martin (Nov. 22 official visit, May 27 unofficial visit, 6-2, 210 lbs., 4.5 in the 40, 305-lb. bench press, 2.5 GPA/24 ACT/1070 SAT) from Madison, Ala., Bob Jones (in the Huntsville area). He missed three games his senior season due to injury, but still rushed for 1300 yards and 17 touchdowns. He visited U-M May 27-28 and committed. He is from Chicago and U-M was his childhood favorite. In eight games as a junior, Martin rushed for 1,069 yards (7.7 yards per carry); he also caught five passes for 133 yards and four more touchdowns; on defense was an outside linebacker in five games, making 53 tackles and two sacks. He is TheInsiders.com's #25 South prospect, and played in the US Army All American Game.

He has family in Detroit. As a senior he rushed for 3,489 yards, including 390 in the State Championship Game. For his career he recorded National High School Records with 204 touchdowns and 47 consecutive 100-yard rushing games, and he ended up with the second highest yardage total in National High School History, 11,045 yards. He is TheInsiders.com's #19 Atlantic area prospect.

The consensus #1 instate junior finished the season with 2,507 yards (including 235 in the State Championship game) and 39 touchdowns. He committed Sept. 8, 2003, after attending the Houston game and before attending the Notre Dame game. He told us, "It was Michigan all the way." He plans to enter college in Jan. 2005. As a sophomore, he started all games (nine regular season & five playoff games) rushing for 2,096 yards and 40 touchdowns; he also caught 15 passes for 192 yards. As a freshman, he was brought up to the varsity from the junior varsity for the second game of the season and started all the remaining games rushing for 1,402 yards and 29 touchdowns.

- RB/Ath. Ja'Kouri Williams (Dec. 5 official visit, 2002 U-M Camper, 5-11, 180 lbs., 4.35 in the 40, 2.2 core GPA/18 ACT) from Plaquemine, La. At the US Army Game (where he played WR and kick returner) he told us, "Michigan is definitely in it for me -- I've not decided on Tennessee or anything. I'm still thinking of taking a visit to Auburn in January." Still, Tennessee is considered his leader. As a senior he missed three games with injuries, and his team lost all three. As a junior he ran for 1,470 yards (12.2 yards per carry) and 28 touchdowns. With Williams at RB Palquemine finished 10-0 each of the past two years in the regular season and 22-2 overall. He is TheInsiders.com's #56 prospect.

Wide Receivers

Next season Michigan will have only three non-scholarship wideouts on ths roster (assuming Grant Mason moves to CB, it's Carl Tabb, Jason Avant and Steve Breaston). No wonder they are hoping to land as many as four of the following (although a couple of them can be considered ‘athletes')!

- Michigan Commitment #1: WR/Ath. Morgan Trent (Dec. 5 official visit. STAN Nike stats: 6-1, 180 lbs., 4.41 in the 40, 3.88 sec. shuttle, 35.3 vertical jump, 15 bench press reps.) from Orchard Lake St. Mary's. OLSM finished 7-3, and Trent finished with 6 interceptions (playing with a soft cast pretty much limited him to defense). He is TheInsiders.com's #34 Big Ten area prospect.

Michigan is in his final two, with either USC (probably) or Miami – he will make a late decision. He was one of the top three performers in the US Army All Star Game. Cameron missed the first five games of his senior season due to an academic issue but has still caught 35 passes for 691 yards and 11 touchdowns as DLS finished 13-0 and won their 12th straight CIF North Coast Section Championship, extending their 151 game winning streak. He is TheInsiders.com's #18 prospect.

Tight End

With four non-senior tight ends on next season's roster (Tim Massaquoi, Tyler Ecker, Adam Kraus and Kevin Murphy if he gets healthy), it's a little hard to believe Michigan would take more than one in this class.

Offensive Linemen

Next season there will be just nine non-senior offensive linemen on the roster – total (see the depth chart for their names). No wonder Michigan has taken four commitments, and would like yet another!

Defensive Linemen

Michigan is just two deep across the defensive line in non-senior players next year (see the depth chart for their names). So, similarly to the O-line, they have taken four commitment in this class and would like to add a 5th (or even a 6th if OLB Tim Jamison is counted as a DE)..

- Michigan commitment #3: DE Chris Rogers (Dec. 5 official visit, 2003 U-M Camper, 6-3, 265 lbs., 4.67 in the 40 {Metro Index Combine}, 350-lb. bench press, 3.3 GPA/950 SAT) from Wexford, Pa., North Allegheny. He attended the OSU game. He injured his knee early in the season, but it is fine now. He committed on the first day of the Michigan Camp. As a junior he recorded 75 tackles, 12 tackles-for-loss and eight sacks. He attended the OSU basketball game Junior Day, and was OFFERED there. He is TheInsiders.com's #32 Big Ten area prospect.

Linebackers

Michigan has eight non-senior linebackers on the roster for next season (seven if Jim Pressley plays FB), so the Wolverines have taken two commitments for this class (Allison below could play FB as well) and hope to add two more.

Defensive Backs

With only three safeties on next year's roster (Ernest Shazor, Jacob Stewart and Willis Barringer if Ryan Mundy stays at cornerback), it is no wonder that Michigan has taken three safety commitments. There are five non-senior corners on the roster – still it's a little surprising that there are NO CB recruits on the list (Ja'Kouri Williams or Doug Dutch could possibly play corner if they wanted to).

- Michigan commitment #8: Safety Charles Stewart (Dec. 12 official visit, 2003 U-M Camper, U-M Nike stats: 6-1 1/2, 188 lbs., 4.47 in the 40, 3.5 GPA/21 ACT) from Farmington Hills, Mich., Harrison. The Numbers Game.

With 18 commitments, will Michigan just go to 23 for this class? That would leave just five more slots open. Or would the Wolverines do the Big-Ten-allowed oversigning-by-two this year and go to 25 … leaving seven remaining slots? Or will some 5th year seniors not return, allowing Michigan to go even higher, to 27 (NCAA max 25, plus the two allowed oversignings). We of course don't know. But we assume that, with nine main recruits left (and of course there are always a few others waiting in the wings, see below*), Michigan would go ahead and take and-or-all of them.

The remaining ‘main' recruits:

1. - RB/Ath. Ja'Kouri Williams (Dec. 5 official visit, 2002 U-M Camper, 5-11, 180 lbs., 4.35 in the 40, 2.2 core GPA/18 ACT) from Plaquemine, La.

2. - WR Cameron Colvin (Sept. 13 official visit, STAN Nike stats: 6-1, 188 lbs., 4.31 in the 40, 3.85 shuttle, 32.4 inch vertical, 13 bench press reps. … 2.3 GPA/16 ACT) from Concord, Calif., De La Salle.
