We Told you It's A Crazy Time!

The period between Michigan's last major recruiting weekend and Signing Day is just crazy! Always has been, always will be! Recruits popping up suddenly and just as suddenly dropping out! And we are bringing it to you! Here is this (Thu.) morning's run through -- both on the solid situations and the iffy ones!

Regarding the suddenly-made-public announcement of junior offensive lineman Justin Schifano (2003 PSU Nike stats: 6-4 1/2, 302 lbs., 5.1 in the 40, 30 bench press reps ... "A student") from Webster, N.Y. Schroeder. It was decided to make his commitment public -- he made the commitment back in the fall when he attended the Notre Dame game. Do you think this connects to the iffiness of the late-season offensive line recruits below? Could be ...

- Dumaka Atkins (scheduled Jan. 23 Michigan official visit, 6-4, 280 lbs., 300 lb. bench press, 3.25 GPA/1110 SAT) from Sarasota, Fla., Booker. Read Don Hoekwater's interview with him last night. FSU now gets his visit this weekend, and Michigan's is moved to next week. And, he's not getting an in-home from Coach Carr ... this is the perfect example of iffiness.

- Offensive lineman Chilo Rachal from Compton (Calif.) Dominguez. The 'soft USC commit' keeps mentioning visiting elsewhere, including Michigan. But his mother told us they've decided to stop talking to the press. But he is visiting USC this weekend, where he will be rubbing elbows with Camerson Colvin and Eugene Germany. The odds on him actually visiting Michigan? In our opinion -- slim.

- Offensive lineman Jeremy Perry (6-3, 290 lbs.) from Kuhuku, Hawaii. Will he visit? Doubtful.

Also, Michigan commitment linebacker Johnny Thompson (6-2, 215 lbs., 4.55 in the 40) from Detroit Crockett. Read Sam Webb's interview last night with him. Anybody think he's really going to visit USC, or anywhere else?

And, repeating from yesterday:

- DL Vernon Gholston (Dec. 5 official visit, 2003 U-M Camper, U-M Nike stats: 6-3, 238 lbs., 4.45 in the 40, 31 bench press reps. … 3.0 GPA) from Detroit Cass Tech. He's already made his official visit, but the question here is whether Michigan keeps recruiting him … possibly.

And regarding the solid recruits.

As reported, Coach Carr made his in-home visit last night with WR Adrian Arrington (Dec. 12 official visit, 2002 U-M Camper, U-M Nike stats: 6-4, 177 lbs., 4.5 in the 40, 32.4 inch vertical, 4.28 sec. Shuttle … 3.5 GPA/qualified, from Cedar Rapids, Ia., George Washington) -- on the eve of his final visit, to UCLA. Adrian told us at the US Army destivities that it was, "Mainly Michigan and Iowa" for him -- and he has already visited both. His decision could come any time after this weekend's visit.

As Sam Webb reported last night, Coach Carr visits WR Doug Dutch (Dec. 12 official visit, 6-2, 185 lbs., 4.3 in the 40, 3.9 GPA, from Washington D.C. Gonzaga) next Wednesday. Doug has finished his official visits now, as he told Sam, has in-homes next week from , "(this) Thursday is Miami, Monday is Florida, Tuesday is Virginia, Wednesday is Michigan, and Thursday is Maryland." Miami and Michigan are considered the favorites, along with perhaps Florida.
