Kicker Johnny Ayers Has Been To U-M Before

We talked to D.C. area kicker <b>Johnny Ayers'</b> mother Saturday about Johnny's interest in Michigan. Turns out he's been on the U-M campus before!

The mother of 'Athlete'/punter Johnny Ayers (6-1, 175 lbs., 3.7 GPA) from Vienna, Vir. (a suburb of D.C.), James Madison told us Saturday:

Regarding his official visits:

"Johnny is on his way to Boston College today (Saturday), for a Saturday-Monday official visit. He'll be going to Michigan next weekend (Jan. 23). He's being recruited by Michigan, BC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Florida. Everyone is recruiting him as a punter."

Regarding Johnny's interest in Michigan.

"Johnny was at Michigan this past summer -- for the kicking camp during Michigan's summer camp. We were there for five days. It was beautiful up there -- the campus is beautiful and we couldn't have had better weather. It's dripping hot and humid here (the Washington D.C. area) in the summer you know. Next week he'll get to see Ann Arbor in the winter. We know it'll be cold -- it's even wintery here right now."

Regarding Johnny as an athlete.

"Whoever lands him will have a true diamond in the rough ... he's a fantastic athlete. He didn't get to really show his ability as a quarterback -- his team didn't throw the ball much. But he never ever left the field -- his coach would say Johnny throws it, he runs, he kicks off, he plays safety on defense ... and that if he could catch his own kicks he would be a returner as well. And he played with a foot injury the whole second half of the season. Still he averaged over 42 yards a kick -- Coach Lieb told us you called and he gave you Johnny's stats. And he's being recruited for baseball as well, and he was all-region last year in basketball. When we were at Michigan last summer the baseball coach talked to us too. Johnny is a guy who plays with his heart and gives 150% at all times."

Regarding Johnny's favorites.

"Johnny doesn't have a favorite. He open minded. All the colleges are pretty much telling him the same thing as far as a scholarship goes -- that they are running short, and that they may have a scholarship for him or they may grey-shirt him until January. We've heard a lot about the grey-shirt thing. But we don't really want him to miss the start of school in the fall. So we're interested to see who comes through with a scholarship offer."

Regarding Ayers' academic interests.

"Johnny wants to be lawyer and a sports agent, so he's looking at the academic reputations of the schools as well."
