"I just talked to Coach Carr Wednesday and he gave me the offer," offensive lineman Dan Doering from Barrington, Ill. High School said. "I also received offers this week from Tennessee and Michigan State." He said Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Northwestern have also offered and that Boston College is showing strong interest.
Doering is considered one of the top offensive line prospects in the country for the class of 2005 and is the best to come out of Illinois since Michigan's own Tony Pape. He is being recruited as a tackle and wants to play there in college. He said he played on the offensive side of the ball this past season but may play some defense this year. "I like a running offense," he said. "Wisconsin and Michigan both have running offenses."
He told GoBlueWolverine Magazine before Signing Day that he has strong ties to Wisconsin. "I rooted for them as a kid because my dad is from Wisconsin and we have a cabin up there," he said. "I've been up on the Wisconsin campus plenty of times but I really don't have a leader because I want to visit the different campuses and see what each has to offer. I'll take some unofficial visits this spring. For my official visits I'll probably visit three schools in the Big Ten and two outside." Doering said he wasn't sure at this time which schools he would visit officially though Wisconsin and Illinois will most likely be on the list.
The Doering's are already getting ready for the barrage of attention that comes with being a top recruit. "A lot of the Big Ten schools are coming by my high school and we're getting a lot of calls," Doering said. Doering's mom said that they have been forewarned about amount of information that will be out there about her son. "I've been told to get the names of people that call so we can check on the things that are being written about Dan," she said.
Last summer Doering camped at Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Northwestern. This summer his camp plans aren't set. He participates in the shot put during the spring and said he'd like to do the same in college, "If the opportunity presents itself."
Doering is being recruited by Michigan Coach Andy Moeller.
Doering's Stats: 6-7, 290 lbs., 5.2 in the 40, 3.3 GPA, Bench Press 16 reps at 185, Squat 425.
