Grandville LB Wants to Stay in Big Ten

Western Michigan is home to some high caliber talent for the recruiting class of 2005. Sunday afternoon GoBlueWolverine Magazine caught up with one of the top linebacker prospects in the State. The Michigan coaches have invited him to pay a visit the Ann Arbor campus very soon.

"Coach Malone called me last week Tuesday and invited me to come down to the Ohio State basketball game on the 29th," running back/linebacker Andrew Hawken from Grandville, Mich. said. "We didn't talk about an offer though."

Hawken, one of the top prospects in the State of Michigan, already has an offer from Purdue and they are recruiting him the hardest. "I talk to them a lot," Hawken said. "I know a couple of guys from this area that went there and I was down there for one of their bowl practices, that was a lot of fun."

Right now Hawken said he has Michigan and Purdue on top, but is also interested in Notre Dame, Michigan State, and Iowa. "I have always liked Michigan and grew up a Michigan fan," he said. "I'm not sure where I'll go but I do want to stay in the Big Ten."

Hawken plays on both sides of the ball for Grandville. "I play every down on offense," he said. "And about every other down on defense." He said he had about 1200 yards rushing and 22 or 23 touchdowns. He received All-Conference and All-Area recognition, and was Honorable Mention for All-State as a running back. Though he does play more on the offensive side of the ball, he said teams are recruiting him as a linebacker, "That's where I want to play in college," he said.

He also plays baseball for Grandville, the State Champion last year, and the fortunes of the baseball team will decide his camp plans. Hawken attended camps at Purdue and Michigan last summer. "We won State last year and we bring back a good team," he said. "That's why I'm not sure if I'll go to any camps this summer. If we do well I'll be kinda busy." Hawken plays centerfield for Granville and said he hit around .450 and, "I like to hit home runs," he said.

Hawken's Stats: 6-2, 215 lbs., 4.75 in the 40, 280 Bench Press Max, 470 Squat Max.
