GBW's US Army Jr. Combine Scouting Reports

GoBlueWolverine was there for you, covering the US Army Junior Combine the day before the All American All Star Game. We talked to many top prospects, including Ryan Reynolds and his coach, Dan Doering and his dad, Brandon Logan and his dad, Derrick Williams, and Michigan commitment James McKinney. Here are our scouting reports on these five top prospects.

Note: the indoor field on which the 40 times were run is a 'slow track, so the times (for once!) are not inflated.

(1) Linebacker Ryan Reynolds from Las Vegas, Nev., Bishop Gorman.

US Army Combine stats: 6-1 1/2, 215 lbs., 4.65 in the 40, 4.17 shuttle, 29 inch vertical jump, 34 bench press reps.

GBW's Combine Scouting Report on Reynolds. To look at Ryan, he has 'good/average' size for a college linebacker. But his quickness and strength and 'motor' are eye-catching. He is reminiscent of the previous year's Combine linebacker Marcus Freeman (from Ohio).

At the Combine Reynolds' coach told us that Reynolds' soph. teammate, also in attendance, is a big Michigan fan. The teammate is a fast and well-built 'scatback-type' running back.

Reynolds is one of USA Today's Top Ten Juniors.

(2) Offensive lineman Dan Doering from Barrington, Illinois.

US Army Combine stats: 6-5 1/2, 270 lbs., 5.29 in the 40, 16 bench press reps of 185 lbs. (his height was originally typed in wrong, but has been corrected).

GBW's Combine Scouting Report on Doering. Athletic, flexible ... young looking with a lot of growth potential. He reminded us of Mike Kolodziej at the same stage.

At the Combine Mr. Doering told us that Michigan's offensive line coach Andy Moeller had recently made his first visit to Barrington High School in December. The dad is from Wisconsin and the family vacations there, and so Mr. Doering said Wisconsin is the school that they have seen and about which they know the most.

Doering is one of USA Today's Top Ten Juniors.

(3) Michigan commitment James McKinney from Louisville, Kent., Central.

US Army Combine stats: 6-1 1/2, 274 lbs., 5.10 in the 40, 14 bench press reps., 24 1/2 inch vertical jump.

GBW's Combine Scouting Report on McKinney. McKinney worked out with the linebackers at the combine. He DOES remind us of Carl Diggs in how he moves, plays, etc. McKinney is a true 'jumbo athlete' who could end up at any one of a number of positions.

As far as possibly reconsidering his Michigan commitment: McKinney was getting lobbied heavily at the Combine to take visits, but any wavering by him, we believe, was outwardly-induced and (hopefully) temporary ... that was the impression we got from talking to him anyway.

(4) Linebacker Brandon Logan from Lexington, Kent., Catholic.

US Army Combine stats: 6-0, 189 lbs., 4.72 in the 40, 11 bench press reps., 26 inch vertical jump.

GBW's Combine Scouting Report on Logan. Think Dhani Jones. He looks bigger than his stats indicate, and he has very good mobility. By the way, we also watched Logan at last spring's Michigan Nike Camp.

Logan's dad told us that Brandon does like Michigan, and that they were hoping for a Michigan offer (which, as we reported to you, they subsequently received). Logan is a former Michigan camper -- his older brother, WR John, attended two Michigan Camps but signed a year ago with Kentucky (we'd heard back then that there was a "younger brother who was even better than John"). Brandon is also friends with James McKinney.

(5) Athlete Derrick Williams from Greenbelt, Md., Roosevelt.

US Army Combine Stats were: 5-11 1/2, 185 lbs., 4.41 in the 40, 31 inch vertical jump, 13 bench press reps.

GBW's Combine Scouting Report on Williams. Not overly tall, not overly big -- but fast, quick, a good leaper, and strong (a great CB prospect in our opinion!). He was Tom Lemming's pick (Tom told us) as the top overall Combine performer.

Williams is one of USA Today's Top Ten Juniors.
