Penn. Athlete King Plans Plenty of Ann Arbor Trips

Perhaps the number one junior prospect in Penn. is cornerback/athlete Justin King from Monroeville, right next door to Woodland Hills ("Mundy-Breastonville"). The Wolverines are recruiting King hard already. And Justin will take a serious look at the Wolverines, King's Head Coach and stepfather told us Monday. In fact, Justin and dad are going to rack up the miles traveling back and forth to and from Ann Arbor the next few months!

We taked Monday to Terry Smith, Head Coach and stepdad of Pittsburgh-area Athlete Justin King. They have multiple trips to Ann Arbor planned for this spring/summer!

Didn't we see Justin at the Penn State Nike Camp last Spring? Wasn't he one of the 'off the charts' kids there?

"Yes, he was there. He had the 3rd fastest 40 time of 4.29 seconds (ed. note:Ted Ginn ran a 4.31). He also had a 3.72 shuttle (ed. note: he beat everyone else by over .2 secs. ... this is the fastest shuttle time we can recall), a 37.1 inch vertical jump, and he did 11 reps. on the bench (185 lbs.). He measured 5-11-even, and weighed 166 lbs. -- he's at 182 now."

Michigan has been after Justin hard this winter?

"Well, they came to the school to say hi to me once a week throughout most of December and January -- the maximum allowed by the NCAA. Coach Carr came in the first time, and assistant coaches after that. So yes, they're interested!"

Are you guys planning any trips to Ann Arbor?

"We're going to Michigan's Junior Day at the end of this month. And we'll go back sometime during their spring ball. And Justin will camp at Michigan this summer. He'll also camp at Ohio State. Last summer he went to the Notre Dame Camp, but I'm not sure if he'll go back there this summer."

Justin plays running back and cornerback for you. Is cornerback Justin's positon of choice for college?

"Well, Michigan is actually recruiting him as a cornerback and wide receiver. But they've told me they have a need a cornerback."

Justin must have a lot of offers already. Is it true that he's looking mainly at the instate schools, Michigan, and Ohio State?

"He has about a dozen offers. And, yes, those are the main schools right now."

You played for Penn State? So would you kind've like Justin to go there?

"I played there from 1987-91 ... right before they joined the Big Ten. But I'm open to wherever Justin decides to go."

And does Justin have a decision timetable?

"Well we were thinking about making an early decision. But after seeing what Anthony Morelli and Andrew Johnson went through right before Signing Day, and all the controversy that created here ... we'll probably wait."

Monroeville is near Woodland Hills. Does Justin know Ryan Mundy and Steve Breaston?

"Oh yes. Woodland Hills is just the next town over. Justin has run against Ryan and Steve in track. In fact, Ryan used to live within the Woodland Hills school district."

As a junior King rushed for 1,763 yards (8.2 yards per carry) and 29 touchdowns. As a cornerback he recorded 28 tackles, three fumble recoveries, and three interceptions. He also has a 3.0 GPA. He was named to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Fabulous 22.
