Michigan Interested in Pennsylvania DE

Erie (Penn.) Strong Vincent Coach Tom Cacchione took the time out to talk with GBW about his star defensive pupil, Christian Fleming -- considered perhaps the top Penn. DE. The Wolverines have shown interest in the Keystone State prospect, but Cacchione indicated that there are some things that may hinder Fleming’s recruitment early on.

There was a report that Michigan had offered Fleming a scholarship. So we went right to that.

Has Michigan offered Christian a scholarship?

“He has not received an offer yet. He’s just gotten a lot of mail. He’s heard from at least 20 division 1 schools, including Michigan.”

Will he be at Michigan’s junior day at the end of the month?

“No he will not.”

Was he a Michigan camper last year?

“No he was not.”

Describe him as a player and where would you project him on the next level?

“He’s about 6-5, 230 lbs. and runs a 4.8 forty. He played DE and TE for us. He had 20 sacks and about 70 solo tackles on defense and with the way he plays on that side of the ball right now, if I were a defensive coordinator I’d never let him go to the other side. He’s an excellent blocker and a great football player, but we’re worried about everything else.”

What do you mean by “everything else?”

“We’re worried about him gaining eligibility. He might be a JC kid.”

Have you guys discussed any possible camps this summer?

“That’s a little far off for this young man. He’s generating a lot of interest right now, but he has other things that he has to deal with before he makes any plans like that.”

GBW will check back on Christian later in the year.
