Recruiting Just Beginning for Butler

One of Jim S' "Super Seven Instate Juniors" is Carson Butler, who played as a sophomore for Lansing, Mich., Waverly before transferring to Detroit Renaissance. We've seen him play hoops on the Renaissance team with Malik Hairston and Joe Crawford, but Carson had to sit out playing football last season. We touched base with him last (Tues.) night to see if he'd gotten any recruiting contact.

Jim S. said in his profile regarding Butler: "Carson has been my super sleeper prospect in this class for over a year now. He has only played a few games of varsity football as he was down on the JV team for much of his sophomore season at Lansing Waverly and had to sit out his junior season after transferring to Detroit Renaissance. Butler's high ranking (by Jim S.) is based on his outstanding athleticism and future potential."

We gave Carson a call last (Tues.) night to see if he'd gotten much recruiting contact yet. Here is what he told us.

"I've gotten some mail so far. But just letters. I haven't been invited to any Junior Days anywhere. I've gotten letters from Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan State, Nebraska, BC, Notre Dame. I've gotten some letters for basketball too -- from Xavier, Dayton, schools like that."

Do you see your college future on the football field, or on the basketball court?

"I think in the end I'll get better offers for football ... although my coach has plans for me for basketball."

Do you have any plans for camps this spring or summer?

"Not really, not yet. I'll see what comes along."

We have you listed at 6-5, 225 lbs. is that correct? What position are you going to play next fall?

"Yeah, I'm 6-5, 225, and I run a 4.6 40. I'll play wide receiver next year for Renaissance."

Wide receiver at 6-5, 225! That should be something! We'll keep track of how things develop for Butler over the spring and summer.
