Jr. Day Afterglow: "Best Guess List:" LB's, DB's

With Michigan looking at a small 2004/05 recruiting class of perhaps 15 or possibly up to 17, filling specific 'position needs' is of primary interest. For this class the needs are pretty obvious -- in our opinion of course.

With needs in mind, here is GoBlueWolverine's first true 2004/05 recruiting class "Best Guess List:" Linebackers, Defensive Backs.

The Need: This is likely a positon of emphasis for the 04/05 recruiting class: two or possibly three may be in order.

- Linebacker Ryan Reynolds (US Army Combine stats: 6-1 1/2, 215 lbs., 4.65 in the 40, 4.17 shuttle, 29 inch vertical jump, 34 bench press reps.) from Las Vegas, Nev., Bishop Gorman. Reynolds is on of USA Today's Top Ten juniors. Michigan has offered him, and he has told us that he will most likely make an official visit to Michigan. He is Max Emfinger's #4 Weakside linebacker.

- Linebacker Brandon Logan (US Army Combine stats: 6-0, 189 lbs., 4.72 in the 40, 11 bench press reps., 26 inch vertical jump.) from Lexington, Kent., Catholic. Brandon is a two-time Michigan Camper and has a U-M offer. The Wolverines lead. He's a Max Emfinger 4-star prospect.

- Linebacker/safety Brian Cushing (Planned U-M Camper, 6-3, 230 lbs., 4.5 in the 40) from Bergen, N.J. Catholic. Michigan was in his school this past winter, and he attended the Feb. 29 Juniot Day. U-M has not offered him yet, but it's still U-M and Stanford for him. As a junior he made 120 tackles, 9 sacks, 7 interceptions and 22 tackles for a loss; as a wide receiver he made 13 catches for 456 yards and seven touchdowns. He was 1st team All-State by the Associated Press, and is Max Emfinger #4 Strongside linebacker.

- Linebacker Chris Jeske (Planned 2004 U-M Camper, 6-2, 215 lbs., 4.5 in the 40, 4.3 GPA) from Joliet, Ill., Catholic (Mike Kolodziej's alma mater). As a junior Jeske made 163 tackles, 113 solo as Joliet Catholic won the Illinois State 5A title. He has early offers from Wisconsin and Northwestern, and Michigan visited his school in December. He will attend the Jan. 29 U-M Junior Day, and most likely attend summer camps at Michigan and Ohio State. He's a Max Emfinger 4-star prospect.

- Linebacker Andrew Hawken (2003 U-M Camper, 6-2, 220 lbs., 4.65 in the 40) from Grandville, Mich. As a junior he missed 1 1/2 games due to injury, but recorded 1,270 yards and 23 touchdowns (as well as 38 receptions) to lead Grandville to the Division 1 semifinals. He grew up a Michigan fan and attended the Feb. 29th Ohio State game Junior Day. He is a Max Emfinger 4-star prospect., and is considered one of the top 10 instate prospects.

- Linebacker Nick Lawrence (U.S. Army Combine stats: 6-2, 205 lbs., 15 bench press reps ... 4.7 in the 40) from Brighton. Brighton -- home of Clint Copenhaver, Drew Henson and Dave Pearson. He grew up a Michigan fan and attended the Feb. 29th Ohio State game Junior Day. He is considered one of the top 10-15 instate prospects.

- Linebacker/defensive lineman Matt Lewis (6-2, 245 lbs., 4.6 in the 40, 310 lb. bench press, 32 inch vertical) from Daytona Beach, Fla., Mainland. As a junior he recorded 86 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 12 sacks to earn second-team All-State honors. He does not have a U-M offer at this time, but is considered one of the top 10-12 Florida juniors -- and U-M may lead for him. Mainland High won the 5-A Florida State Championship last fall.

- LinebackeRyan Bain (6-2, 240 lbs., 4.65 in the 40) from Bolingbrook, Ill. As a junior he made 128 tackles and 28 tackles for loss. He's a Max Emfinger 4-star prospect.

- Linebacker Andre Mathis (6-2, 230 lbs., 4.6 in the 40) from Erie, Pa., Cathredal Prep. He's a Max Emfinger 4-star prospect, and U-M may be his favorite.

- Outside linebacker/defensive end Carson Butler (6-5, 228 lbs., 4.6 in the 40) from Detroit Renaissance. A transfer from Lansing Waverly who had to sit out last season due to transfer rules. He may be the top ‘sleeper' in the state.

- Linebacker/tight end Emmanuel Southern (2003 U-M Camper, 6-4, 220 lbs.,4.6 in the 40) from Saginaw, Mich. He attended the Feb. 29th Ohio State game Junior Day.

- Linebacker Cedric Godfrey (6-2, 224 lbs., 4.54 in the 40, 34 inch vert., 300 lb. bench press) from Cedar Hill, Tex. (Dallas area). He reportedly is a fan of U-M and Florida.

- Linebacker Nathan Thomas (6-1, 220 lbs., 2.8 GPA) from Claremont, Calif. As a junior he made 101 tackles.

- Linebacker Tom Korte (6-1, 220 lbs.) from Grand Rapids, Mich., Catholic Central. He attended the Jan. 29 Junior Day.

The Need: with Marlin Jackson and Markus Curry both going into their final seasons for the Wolverines, cornerback is quite likely a position of recruiting-emphasis. If U-M takes three DB's in this class, they might all be corners.

- Cornerback/athlete Justin King (5-11, 182 lbs., 2003 PSU Nike stats: 4.29 in the 40, 3.72 sec. shuttle, 37.1 inch vertical jump, 11 bench press reps., 3.0 GPA) from Monroeville, Pa. Considered perhaps the #1 junior prospect in Pennsylvania, he rushed as a junior for 1,763 yards (8.2 yards per carry) and 29 touchdowns; and as a cornerback he recorded 28 tackles, three fumble recoveries, and three interceptions. His stepfather/coach (a PSU grad) told us Justin would visit U-M for it's late Feb. Junior Day, for a spring practice, and for the Michigan Summer Camp. He is Max Emfinger's All-purpose back #2.

- Wideout/cornerback Derrick Williams from Greenbelt, Md., Roosevelt, whose US Army Combine Stats were: 5-11 1/2, 185 lbs., 4.41 in the 40, 31 inch vertical jump. True, Michigan has now offered him verbally. He has told us that he is interested in Michigan. He finished his junior year with 1,500 yards rushing and 24 touchdowns on the ground along with 700 passing yards and eight touchdowns through the air. On special teams Williams racked up 400 yards in kickoff retruns and took three punt returns back for touchdowns. Defensively he notched three interceptions, one that was taken back. Emfinger Wide Receiver #3.

- Athlete Antonio Bass (6-1, 190 lbs., 4.4 in the 40, 3.0 GPA) from Jackson, Mich. He is one of the consensus top three instate juniors, and could play wideout, running back or cornerback. He has a U-M offer and attended the Feb. 29 Junior Day. Michigan leads for him.

- Cornerback Avery Atkins (6-2, weighs 190 lbs. 4.4 in the 40, 310 lb. bench press, 35 inch vertical) from Daytona Beach, Fla., Mainland. As a junior he made 39 tackles, six pass breakups and three interceptions. He has offers from FSU and Miami.

- Safety Adam Myers-White (6-3, 200 lbs.) from Hamilton, Ohio. The former head coach at Hamilton was Wolverine Andy Mignery's father. And White's dad played for Bo. He reportedly has a U-M offer, and plans to attend the Feb. 29 Junior Day ... but OSU reportedly leads.

- Cornerback Michael Ray Garvin from Ramsey, N.J. Don Bosco. At the U.S. Army Junior Combine a Don Bosco coach came over and introduced himself to us. Here are Garvin's combine stats: 5-7 1/2, 172 lbs., a blazing 4.37 in the 40 (fastest time at the combine), 4.33 shuttle, an excellent 22 bench press reps. (best of all DB's), and a very good 30 inch vertical jump. We'll see if the height measurement holds back his recruitment or not. He is Max Emfinger's #3 Cornerback.

- Cornerback Brandon Harrison (5-9, 200 lbs.) from Dayton, Ohio Chaminade-Julienne. He is Max Emfinger's #2 Free Safety. He attended the Feb. 29 Junior Day.

- Cornerback Keith Fitzhugh (Planned 2004 Michigan Camper, 5-11, 190 lbs., 4.4 in the 40, 3.0 GPA/860 SAT) from Lovejoy, Ga. FSU and U-M are his favorites.

- Athlete Akim Sanders (6-1, 190 lbs., 2.8 GPA) from Detroit Crockett. Michigan is his favorite school.

- Quarterback/Athlete Jermaine Jenkins (6-2, 200 lbs.) from Saginaw, Mich. He attended the Feb. 29 Junior Day.
