Top Jr. LB Was 2003 Michigan Camper

Washington linebacker Rico McCoy is considered one of the top ten junior 'backers in the country. And he was a U-M Camper last summer. We talked to Rico Wednesday evening.

Washington D.C. St. John's College's Rico McCoy is a 6-1, 215 lb. linebacker who runs a sub-4.6 40. As a junior he made 120 tackles and five sacks. He is Max Emfinger's #2 weakside linebacker. And we'd heard something interesting about him.

Rico, you went to the Michigan Camp last summer?

"Yes sir ! I wanted to see how Michigan was. I'd heard all good things about it. Just think of tradition there! And my coach told me it was a good place. And Eliott Uzelac (former Michigan assistant coach), who is the coach at Georgetown now, told me last year to go over there and check out the Michigan Camp."

How did you like camp?

"It was real good. I enjoyed it. On the last day I had lunch with Coach Carr. And my dad and I met with him in his office. He told me he he was looking forward to me coming back this summer."

Do you know Doug Dutch at all?

"Yeah, I know Doug. Our teams play in the same league."

Who has offered you a scholarship so far?

"Pitt, Maryland, and Syracuse (McCoy's brother, Reggie, is a freshman defensive back at Syracuse)."

If Michigan comes after you hard in the spring and summer, would they be in your top group?

"Yes sir! I see that they've offered a couple linebackers already, Ryan Reynolds and Brandon Logan. But yeah, they would!"

Who else has been in contact with you?

"I've gotten mail from a lot of schools ... Miami, Penn State, Ohio State UCLA, Michigan of course ... and Purdue, Wisconsin, NC-State, Arizona State, North Carolina, and others."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I love to hit -- I LOVE that. I THRIVE on that. I'm a student of the game ... I like to watch film. But I LOVE contact."

We'll check back with McCoy again during the spring Evaluation Period.
